Joining the Unum Summer Intern Program is a great way to enhance your business acumen, gain meaning professional experience and acquire deep insight into the insurance industry. After orientation and on-boarding, you'll join one of our business areas, where you will be assigned meaningful, challenging project work, that will have an immediate and important impact on our business. You'll work on collaborative projects, while also having ownership of individual work, that will push you to learn and grow, as a professional.

Our interns participate in weekly workshops where they will learn more about professional development skills and about Unum and how we do business. You will also participate in a cross-functional business case challenge with other interns, to solve for real business needs, which culminates with an end of summer presentation to key business leaders.

Interns selected for this program, will initially be hired into the Summer Intern Program generally and then will be placed with a specific team in the early Spring. This 10-week 'intern immersion' has many different departments that an intern can join, such as Finance, Accounting, Benefits, Business Operations, Communications, Human Resources, and Underwriting, to name a few!

We are looking for individuals to bring their curiosity and individuality to Unum, where you'll develop professional skills, get hands-on experience that will help you grow both personally and professionally.

  • Earn college credit for your internship. (Faculty/Hiring Manager pre-approvals are required)


  • Candidate must be enrolled in an accredited college degree program. Preference given to rising seniors and first year graduate students.

  • Required GPA of 3.0

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and on-campus involvement

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills

  • Demonstrated ability to think both strategically and tactically

  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel software applications

  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed on project work.

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Intern must be available to work 40 hours per week during regular business hours.

  • The internship program starts in early June 2022 and will last about 10-12 weeks.

Financial Services Business Units include: Financial Operations & Performance - performs functions such as carrying out TVA's financial close process, financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, business plan development, capital project planning, performance reporting, competitive analysis and benchmarking. Treasury - oversees management of TVA's cash flows, liquidity management, debt management, investor relations, investment of TVA assets, counterparty creditworthiness, management of insurance policies, consolidation and prioritization of enterprise risks, and assessment of completeness and effectiveness of enterprise risk mitigation plans. Corporate Accounting - Develops accounting policies and provide technical accounting training, prepares financial statements for external stakeholders, including the SEC and US Treasury, manages accounting -of the General Ledger, payroll and accounts payable, and ensures sound control environment through TVA's Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) program. Enterprise Planning - leads development of TVA's strategic plan, including long-range financial and resource plans, with the objective to meet the Valley's energy needs in the most effective way. Commercial Energy Solutions - comprised of four distinct departments, all of which are focused on providing high-value solutions to meet the needs of Local Power Companies, end-use customers, business and industry, and TVA. Innovation & Research - leads enterprise-wide transformative innovation as well as research that closes technology gaps necessary for integrating the energy network, maintaining excellence in environmental stewardship, preparing TVA's fleet for a flexible low-carbon future, and finding successful solutions for customers in this rapidly changing utility marketplace. Principal Accountabilities: Example duties include: * Become familiar with the TVA business, organization, key decision makers, Financial Services processes and procedures. Intern will have the opportunity to interact with Financial Services leaders and team members while learning the key components that drive Financial Services' strategic direction. * Develop working knowledge of critical Financial Services functions including: finance and accounting; business planning; enterprise planning; portfolio management; treasury and commercial energy solutions. * Learn to apply policies and procedures across the organizations; recommend continuous improvement changes in support of business needs, and proactively develop an understanding of policies, procedures, and culture and communicate these to new and existing employees.
