Joining the Unum Summer Intern Program is a great way to enhance your business acumen, gain meaning professional experience and acquire deep insight into the insurance industry. After orientation and on-boarding, you'll join one of our business areas, where you will be assigned meaningful, challenging project work, that will have an immediate and important impact on our business. You'll work on collaborative projects, while also having ownership of individual work, that will push you to learn and grow, as a professional.

Our interns participate in weekly workshops where they will learn more about professional development skills and about Unum and how we do business. You will also participate in a cross-functional business case challenge with other interns, to solve for real business needs, which culminates with an end of summer presentation to key business leaders.

Interns selected for this program, will initially be hired into the Summer Intern Program generally and then will be placed with a specific team in the early Spring. This 10-week 'intern immersion' has many different departments that an intern can join, such as Finance, Accounting, Benefits, Business Operations, Communications, Human Resources, and Underwriting, to name a few!

We are looking for individuals to bring their curiosity and individuality to Unum, where you'll develop professional skills, get hands-on experience that will help you grow both personally and professionally.

  • Earn college credit for your internship. (Faculty/Hiring Manager pre-approvals are required)

Qualifications

  • Candidate must be enrolled in an accredited college degree program. Preference given to rising seniors and first year graduate students.

  • Required GPA of 3.0

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and on-campus involvement

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills

  • Demonstrated ability to think both strategically and tactically

  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel software applications

  • Ability to work independently and be self-directed on project work.

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Intern must be available to work 40 hours per week during regular business hours.

  • The internship program starts in early June 2022 and will last about 10-12 weeks.

Examples of Business Units the intern could be assigned include, but are not limited to the following: Corporate Accounting - Develops accounting policies and provide technical accounting training, prepares financial statements for external stakeholders, including the SEC and US Treasury, manages accounting -of the General Ledger, payroll, and accounts payable, and ensures sound control environment through TVA's Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) program. Financial Operations & Performance - performs functions such as carrying out TVA's financial close process, financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting, business plan development, capital project planning, performance reporting, competitive analysis and benchmarking. Communications - Develops content to help strategically advance the enterprise mission, strengthen company culture, and drive business results. Strives to tell "the TVA story" and share the value of the public power model with both internal and external stakeholders. Delivers messages through various functions including employee communications, media relations, social media, business communications and creative services. Business Human Resources - Provides proactive support, advice, consultation, and solutions to the business leaders on all people-related subjects, including advising on talent and strategic organizational issues that support business strategies Economic Development- Serves to attract new companies and investment to the TVA region, engage existing business and industries, and serve with our partners to help communities prepare for economic growth. Principal Accountabilities: Example duties include: * Become familiar with the TVA business, organization, key decision makers, business processes and procedures. The intern will have the opportunity to interact with leaders and team members while learning the key components that drive their business unit's strategic direction. * Develop working knowledge of critical business functions as outlined by the intern's manager and business unit. * Learn to apply policies and procedures across the organizations: recommend continuous improvement changes in support of business needs and proactively develop an understanding of policies, procedures, and culture and communicate these to new and existing employees. In compliance with federal vaccination requirements, TVA employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 no later than November 22, 2021.
