Institutional Research and Analytics (IRA) invites applications for a Business Intelligence Analyst.

A unit reporting to the Office of the Provost, IRA provides accurate data, reliable information and reporting, and expert analysis and guidance on use of data in support of the University's teaching, research, and service mission.

The BI Analyst plays a key role in implementing reporting and analytics solutions that enable operational, planning, decision-making, and compliance activities at UVA. Using the Qlik-based University Business Intelligence (UBI) platform as the primary reporting and analytics environment, the BI Analyst provides expertise in creating solutions for our end users and stakeholders.

Reporting to IRA's Associate Director for Data and Analytics, the BI Analyst will work with a team of dedicated and experienced BI professionals within UBI, as well as cross-functional data practitioners, end users, and stakeholders from across the University. IRA will provide training, mentorship, and access to industry-leading tools.

Successful candidates will be creative problem solvers, collaborators, able to keep multiple projects on track simultaneously, and always looking for opportunities for improvement.

Job Description:

BI Development Lifecycle Owner (80%):

The Business Intelligence Analyst will manage the business intelligence development lifecycle, from evaluation of an end-user's business problem to delivery of finished product, including, but not limited to the following:

  • Articulate and synthesize the user's business problem and requirements, within the scope of the University's systems, processes, and governance around data.

  • Formulate and define systems scope and objectives, creating clear user stories and documenting specifications for reporting developers, to make use of the broad functionality of the UBI toolset.

  • Serve as a liaison and communication channel between clients/end-users and reporting developers.

  • Follow established standards for thorough testing, data validation, and user acceptance throughout the project lifecycle, engaging end-users, business process owners, and subject matter experts as needed.

  • Collaborate with training developer as needed to ensure that end-users have the tools and instructions needed to employ the new or enhanced reporting solution.

  • Develop and apply an expert knowledge of University datasets and structures, data modeling, and software architecture to create solutions based on user needs.

  • Devise or modify moderately complex information systems to include analysis of business and user needs, documenting requirements and revising existing system logic difficulties as necessary.

  • Create and maintain documentation that supports the ongoing development and use of UBI solutions and other integrated analytical tools.

  • Prototype usable and informative reports, analytics, and dashboards by applying design and reporting best practices to convey the necessary information effectively and efficiently. Design and develop charts, tables, expressions, and variables as needed in the UBI platform (based on Qlik tools) or other software (e.g., Excel, Power BI, Tableau) as required.

  • Pursue continuous improvement activities within and external to IRA: collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to make development processes and reporting solutions more effective and efficient.

User Engagement - Support and Training (20%)

  • Serve as an advocate for UBI Users and other data practitioners, promoting data fluency, appropriate data governance, and proper stewardship of University data.

  • Collaborate with training developer and colleagues to assist and train end-users and other stakeholders in the use of UBI through communication channels, presentations, workshops, and individual coaching sessions.

  • Assist with troubleshooting and support.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to promote best practices and continuous improvement activities to ensure an outstanding user experience.

Qualifications:

Strong analytical skills.

Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Ability to work independently and collaborate with team members.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: At least three (3) years of relevant experience in requirements-gathering, data analysis, reporting, and visualization

Preferred Requirements:

Experience with Qlik (QlikView, Qlik Sense) tools, or other business intelligence software (e.g., Power BI, Excel, Tableau).

Experience in Higher Education and the use of data to support decision-making. Knowledge of UVA systems, (e.g. UBI, SIS, Workday) is a plus.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $70,000 - $80,000 depending on experience and education

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This is a hybrid position with required days weekly in the office in Charlottesville, VA (currently Tuesdays through Thursday in the office, with remote working option on Mondays and Fridays).
