Individuals within the Business Intelligence (BI) role work closely with customers, business analysts, system analysts, and application developers to turn data into critical information and knowledge that can be used to make sound business decisions. They provide data that is congruent and reliable, and ensure the information is easily accessible by the user. BI professionals educate and train customers to use the data as an analytical tool, displaying the information in new forms and content for the purpose of analysis and option exploration.

BI professionals identify business intelligence needs and determine optimum system requirements to meet those needs. It is essential that individuals in this job profile build an understanding of the business at a level of detail that enables them to identify and address critical issues. They ensure that all proper questions have been identified and influence the understanding of analytical processes and data needed for business examination and decision-making.

  • Provides design support for the development of business intelligence solutions.

  • Works on medium to complex and cross-functional IT and business intelligence solutions.

  • Works on multiple tasks/projects as team member.

  • Sometimes works as a functional lead on less complex projects.

Project / Work Requirements

  • Participates in workstream planning process including inception, technical design, development, testing and delivery of BI solutions.

  • May participate in project management estimation process.

  • Develops demand forecasts.

Business Requirements:

  • Works with internal and external customers and IT partners to develop and analyze business intelligence needs.

  • Provides input to business requirements and functional specifications for the design and implementation of solutions.

  • Interprets business requirements and determines optimum BI solutions to meet needs.

  • Identifies and provides input to new technology opportunities that will have an impact on the enterprise-wide BI systems.


  • Analyzes, designs and develops business intelligence BI applications/solutions.

  • Analyzes, designs, and develops query parameters, layout, filters, and analytics for business solutions.

  • Provides recommended solutions for the development of reports keeping usability, security and data integrity.

  • Designs and develops and optimizes enterprisewide information "views" and custom reports.

  • Analyzes and tests new releases/versions of BI applications/solutions in order to determine rollout schedule, technical compatibility and identify and resolve integration issues.

  • Enhances the performance of business intelligence tools by defining data to filter and index information that adds value to the user.


  • May lead or provide functional direction for the planning, designing, and execution of testing efforts.

  • Develops, executes and documents test functional plans.

  • Reviews test plans and monitors testing process to ensure that business results are tested.

  • Provides support to test teams.

  • Resolves issues based on test results.


  • Provides adhoc, warranty, and post implementation phase support.

  • Troubleshoots solution outputs.

  • Recommends improvements for BI applications and services.

  • Influences service definition.

  • Drives down service costs.

  • Optimizes BI applications or performs report and query tuning to improve performance.

  • Supports and helps manage external resources, such as service providers and vendor field support.

Information Quality Assurance:

  • Provides input to the development of information quality metrics.

  • Creates data quality tickets, as needed.


  • Researches tools, frameworks and mechanisms for data analytics.

  • Interfaces with vendors to keep abreast of new technologies, pricing and customer applicability.

  • Participates in vendor evaluations.

Policies, Standards and Procedures:

  • Adheres to current standards.

  • Provides input to policies, standards, and procedures for the form, structure and attributes of the BI tools and systems.


  • Develops end-user training materials.

  • Designs and delivers end-user training and training materials.

  • Trains users to transform data into action-oriented information and to use that information correctly.


  • Provides guidance, training, and problem solving assistance to other team members.

  • Coaches less-experienced individuals.

  • Bachelor's degree in Programming

  • Systems, Business Management, Computer Science or other related field; Or specialized training/certification; Or equivalent work experience.

  • Typically requires 5-7 years of related technical experience including 2 or more years experience in designing and developing business intelligence tools and systems.

  • Experience in data analysis and data mining.

  • Knowledge of one or more business/functional areas.

What you will be doing Individuals in the EDI Business Analysis role are responsible for serving as a liaison between the business community and the IT organization. They collect, analyze, develop, document, communicate business requirements, and support user testing to achieve business goals as it relates to EDI/Data Exchange Services. EDI Business Analysts continually seek opportunities to increase customer satisfaction, deepen client relationships, and effectively manage customer expectations. Based on breadth and depth of understanding of business needs and processes, they collaborate with EITS teams to determine if solutions currently exist (internally or externally) or whether new solutions are feasible. They take a broad perspective to determine how such solutions will impact existing work processes and systems, and how to manage the integration. EDI Business Analysis professionals are responsible for proactively identifying technology opportunities that impact corporate business strategies and performance. EDI Business Analyst will educate project team members on business unit goals and objectives and educate the business on the value of information technology. They also display innovation in identifying, proposing, and overseeing the execution of business solutions. Through adaptable communication skills and the ability to translate between technical and business language, they work collaboratively, negotiating requirements across multiple groups. EDI Business Analyst must have a solid understanding of the client's existing business processes, the key drivers and measures of success for the business, and the short- and long-term direction of the business and related technologies. EDI Business Analyst will interface directly with the internal business units as well as external EDI customers and suppliers to establish the specifications for interchange activity. EDI Business Analyst will have good working knowledge of the distribution channels and be able to confidently talk about ABC's EDI capabilities. The EDI Business Analyst will have working knowledge of the technical tools used in the EDI area. Job responsibilities include gathering EDI functional requirements, writing requirements, and providing project effort estimates. The EDI Business Analyst must be familiar with Trading Partner setups, including knowledge of AS2, FTP and SFTP, handling requests and identifying all request aspects of EDI activity.
