Our Renewables team is growing and we're seeking a Business Development Engineer to join the team!

In this position you will work directly with internal and external customers, growing our areas of business within Renewables and Solar Photovoltaics (PV) products and systems. Our new team member will also be responsible for developing go-to-market strategy, facilitating and overseeing product launches and sales training. This individual must possess technical knowledge within solar PV, have excellent communication skills both written and verbal, with the ability to clarify complex requirements for a wide range of customers. Additionally, you will be responsible for:

The Business Development Engineer role allows technical employees the opportunity to use their technical aptitude while developing business skills working on commercial activities under the supervision of a business development manager. This role combines the responsibilities of an engineer and a business development professional.


  • Analyze potential and existing markets in order to identify business opportunities. Determines project scope and specifications with substantial latitude for action or decision. Recommends changes in procedures, design or equipment where necessary.

  • Initiates communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services. Communicates with clients to provide technical assistance in reference to complex product evaluation and/or inspection and follow-up services. Follows up on contacts from clients. Resolves technical issues and explains UL procedures and requirements.

  • Together with the BDM carry out market research in order to develop strategies and roadmaps for segments. Develop and maintain good customer relationship for the future growth.

  • Plans, conducts and supervises projects of major magnitude and scope. Determines areas in which the product is not in compliance with UL requirements or of any changes in project scope or specifications, and notifies client.

  • Coordinates complex laboratory activities by developing data sheets. Coordinates administrative aspects of project management. May serve as Project Handler of record and may sign as Reviewer of record as assigned.

  • Provide support to marketing team, in the area of developing strategies for service promotions. Prepare presentations, proposals on effective development of business opportunities.

  • Together with the PDEs, develops UL requirements for testing products beyond the scope of existing standards, or those involving unique features requiring frequent use of independent judgment. Develops special test methods and test equipment. Represents UL on technical committees of national and/or international organizations.

  • Provides leadership and technical advice on special projects that involve complex, new or unusual issues.

  • Assist the relevant management in resourcing, budgeting, and problem solving activities. Develop campaigns and other activities that will help in increasing the recognition of UL in particular for GMA.

  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct, and follow all physical and digital security practices.

  • Performs other duties as directed.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an ABET accredited program. Electrical Engineering is preferred.

  • 5 years of directly related work experience.

  • Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary related to codes and standards.

  • Working knowledge of conformity standards in use in areas of expertise.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply project-handling concepts in use in areas of expertise, including application to complex, new, or unusual products. Working knowledge of industry issues, needs, and problems.

  • Ability to sell with a compelling value-add strategy approach.

  • Detailed understanding of the applicable industry product lines and target markets.
