Bus Operator-Transportation Dispatcher

POSITION GOAL

Improve the effectiveness of communications between the bus operators and transportation terminal by supplying accurate and timely information to ensure the safe transport of students.

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Transportation Dispatcher shall carry out the essential performance responsibilities listed below:

• Monitor and record destinations and arrival times of all district transportation personnel equipped with radio communications to ensure buses travel and arrive in a safe manner.

• Respond to requests for security assistance, breakdown assistance, or critical incident reports by communicating problem to the appropriate parties and dispatching proper units.

• Respond to radio inquiries from drivers to provide directions and routing information when operating unfamiliar routes, dealing with lost students, and any safety related issues.

• Contact bus drivers, parents, and school personnel to resolve problems concerning students, routing, bus stop time, location, and other issues as required.

• Contact schools and inform them of incidents and changes of routing schedule, late arrivals, returning buses, and additional back-up buses.

• Maintain daily dispatch logs, telephone, and pager lists for all schools to ensure updated records.

• Respond to student transportation inquiries from district personnel, school staff, parents, students, and the general public.

• Perform and promote all activities in compliance with equal employment and non-discrimination policies of the School Board of Broward County.

• Participate successfully in the training programs offered to increase the individual's skill and proficiency related to the assignments.

• Review current developments, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.

• Ensure adherence to good safety procedures.

• Follow Federal and State laws, as well as School Board policies.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor II, Transportation Terminal or designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Standard high school diploma or satisfactory completion of an earned General Educational Development (GED) Testing Program.

• Minimum of three (3) years experience as a School Bus Operator.

• Knowledge of two-way communication and radio call signals applicable to a dispatching environment preferred. Broad working knowledge of Broward County roads, schools, and vehicle maintenance system is required.

• Must be able to quickly prioritize duties and respond appropriately to emergency situations.
  OR

• Minimum of three (3) years experience as a School Bus Operator.

• Knowledge of radio signs and signals applicable to a dispatching environment preferred. Broad working knowledge of Broward County roads, schools, and vehicle maintenance system is required. Must be able to quickly prioritize duties and respond appropriately to emergency situations.

• Computer skills as required for the position.

• Required to successfully complete the District Dispatcher training program within thirty (30) days of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Bilingual skills preferred.
