JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Bus Mechanic

JOB STATUS: FLSA Overtime Eligible

REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Transpertation

DEPARTMENT: Business Operations

POSITION SUMMARY: To keep the district's buses and Fleet vehicles in such a state of operating excellence that they are safe to transport students and present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A high school diploma or training and experience that are considered equivalent.

  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certifications in: Medium/Heavy truck, School Bus, Transit, Automotive, Brakes.

  • Cummins Certification preferred.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical specifications regarding school bus parts and related equipment in the service department.

  • International and Freightliner experience preferred.

  • Ohio Class B CDL with SP endorsement preferred, qualified to obtain if not currently held.

  • 3 years verifiable employment records in motor vehicle and maintenance.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact in a professional manner.

  • A suitably dressed, neat and clean appearance.

  • Being physically qualified (Rule 3301-83-07 of the Ohio Administrative Code).

  • Such alternatives to the above quali?cations as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Diagnoses equipment problems and performs necessary repairs on district vehicles.

  • Maintains vehicle service records using current fleet maintenance software program.

  • Performs regular maintenance following the preventative maintenance schedule.

  • Repairs, overhauls, maintains and services diesel/alternative fuel powered buses and transportation fleet vehicles and equipment.

  • Investigates, addresses and prioritizes complex issues to determine the course of action and solve service related issues.

  • Presents information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.

  • Reviews maintenance support applications daily for exceptions and reports findings to the department head in regards to fluid usage and tire pressure readings from continental yard readers.

  • Performs diagnostic tests for routine maintenance procedures and determines a course of action for damaged parts and systems.

  • Repairs malfunctioning components, retrofits engines, changes brakes, adjusts steering systems, replaces worn-out parts, and changes hydraulic fluids.

  • Uses computerized equipment along with welding torches, pneumatic wrenches, hydraulic jacks, screwdrivers, pliers, mallets and precision gauges and other applicable equipment.

  • Ensures the safety of students.

  • Establishes and maintains cooperative professional relationships.

  • Remains free of any alcohol or nonprescription controlled substances and abuse of prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout employment in the district.

  • Exhibits professional behavior, emotional stability, and sound judgment.

  • Serves as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.

  • Understands the legal responsibility to help install in students the belief in, and practice of, ethical principles and democratic values.

  • Maintains confidentiality and respect for confidential information at all times.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or their designee.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 261 days (251 work days and 10 paid holidays); 8 hours per day, excluding lunch; number of days of vacation, holidays and salary as determined by Negotiated Agreement. Work year to be established by the Board.

SALARY: starting hourly rate: $23.97/HR. - $27.75/HR.
