PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The role of the Bus Driver Trainer/Clerk is to train drivers/monitors and assist with clerical duties under the direction and supervision of the Director of Transportation and Bus Route Supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

TEA certification requirements

High School Graduate or GED

Certified school bus driver with CDL License class B with endorsements P(passengers) S(school bus)

Driver education training experience preferred

Ability to communicate effectively

TEEX Certification preferred

Clear DPS license check

Evidence of course work in English, Typing and/or Business Course applicable to the position

Ability to type with reasonable accuracy 35 words per minute or verification of skill and training in the areas of job requirement and must be computer literate

Competence in basic office procedures and the operation of common office equipment and machines

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Train bus drivers on approved T.E.A. District routes.

  • Train bus drivers on guidelines and policies as per the Transportation Handbook.

  • Train drivers on discipline procedures.

  • Conduct safety-training sessions.

  • Monitor routes.

  • Assist in gathering route description information.

  • Answer telephone and related calls or messages to appropriate personnel.

  • Provide information to public regarding transportation routes, policies, etc.

  • Type a variety of materials.

  • File records as directed.

  • Maintain logs as directed.

  • Assist in payroll preparation as directed.

  • Review bus conduct reports.

  • Drive a school bus as needed.

  • Assist as bus monitor as directed.

  • Assistant Dispatcher.

  • Maintain absentee reports.

  • Maintain Driver Region One Certification files.

  • Maintain employee D.O.T. and Pre-employment physical files.

  • Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or to others.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED:

  • School bus safety equipment, to include reflective signs, first aid kits, fire extinguishers and etc. Two-way radio, typewriter, computer, printer, copier, and calculator, routing software, GPS software.

  • District vehicles.

  • District cameras

  • District cell phone.

  • Maintain emotional control under stress; occasional district travel; repetitive hand motions

QUALIFICATIONS: Education /Certification: High School Graduate or GED preferred Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License Class B with Endorsement P (passenger) and S (school bus) Special Knowledge/Skills: Must be 21 years of age Must clear the Department of Public Safety license checks Maintain an acceptable criminal history record, secured from any law enforcement agency or criminal justice agency, and reviewed in accordance with the provisions of Education Code Chapter 22 Must meet the medical qualifications specified by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) at 37 TAC 14.12 Maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with minimum standards established by the DPS at 37 TAC 14.14 Ability to complete required bus driver safety training Ability to follow written and verbal instructions Ability to communicate effectively Knowledge of student discipline procedures Ability to manage behavior of students Must be available for a.m. and p.m. routes and other extra curricular driving runs MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: * Assumes responsibility for the safe driving of a school bus. * Assumes responsibility for the safety of children while under his/her supervision. * Observes all traffic and safety laws, rules, and regulations. * Prepares misconduct reports to report disciplinary problems. * Observes safety practices at all times in performing duties. * Drivers must cross over all students who live on the opposite side of the roadway. Vehicle Operation: * Follows assigned routes and adheres to established schedules. * Transports only authorized students. * Drives bus to and from extracurricular activities. * Exercises responsible leadership when on out-of-district school trips. * Checks bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify Bus Route Supervisor/Team Leader of needed repairs. (Daily Operation Reports). * Reports all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, mechanical failure, and complete required reports. * Keeps records on bus mileage, fuel and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported. * Keeps assigned bus clean and fueled. * Ability to operate lift with or without power. * Maintains reports such as:mileage, fuel usage and servicing. Student Management: * Supervises students as they board and exit bus. * Learns and adapts to each student's special medical, physical, communicative and emotional needs. * Communicates with principals, teachers and parents as needed regarding disruptive student behavior. * Prepares Bus Conduct Reports to report disciplinary problems. * Instructs students on safe riding rules and regulations. Safety: * Observes all traffic laws, and safety regulations for school buses. * Inspects buses by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, lift, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving. * Ensures proper conditions of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, body fluid kits, and reflectors. * Instructs students on safe riding and regulations. * Reports any hazardous conditions along scheduled routes. * Loads and unloads students only at authorized stops. Other: * Operates two-way radios to communicate with transportation office. * Works irregular hours as needed. * Attends and completes required training program to maintain certification status. * Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus. * Must adhere to ECISD School Dress Code Policy * Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or to others. * Performs other related duties, as assigned.
