Job Duties

Under general supervision, duties include but are not limited to: provide a means of transportation for students/staff of the Georgia Academy for the Blind; responsible for meeting state driver licensure requirements and obeys all laws for operation of a school bus; the candidate is under the supervision of the school Property and Supply Manager and the Superintendent; enforce normal school system and/or state regulations while transporting groups; maintain a safe environment within the bus by enforcing rules of conduct and responding to emergencies; cleaning the bus at the end of each trip; stay with groups on all trips; demonstrate courteous and respectful behavior with students, staff and the general public; prohibit food and smoking or unsafe conduct on bus; perform pre and post trip safety and maintenance checks; advise supervisor of any maintenance or repair needs; complete records of all trips and submit them weekly.

Official Title: <br><br> Bus Monitor (Discipline) Job Code: 873 Working Title: <br><br> Bus Monitor (Aide) Salary Grade: Length of Work Year: 180 days Reports To: <br><br> Summary Description of Classification: Employees in this class are responsible for the care and safety of students with disciplinary issues transported to and from their homes and schools. Nature of work involves managing student behavior to provide the driver freedom to operate the school bus safely by creating a positive and safe transportation environment. <br><br> Bus attendants must exercise constant alertness to children's behavioral problems and to react promptly in the events of disciplinary outbreak or other problems. Employee in this class must also be knowledgeable of all students assigned to the bus. Work is performed under the direction of a Transportation Supervisor, or designated assistant, teachers, administrators and bus operators. <br><br> Minimum Qualification Standards Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Aptitude for working with children. Knowledge of the field of child development and behavioral issues. <br><br> Considerable patience and ability to assist with the well being of students and maintain the bus in an orderly manner. Able to keep confidential student information. Ability to take control and enforce bus rules and regulations. <br><br> Ability to assume responsibility to learn bus evacuation procedures. Physical and emotional stamina to meet job requirements. Good human relations and communication skills. <br><br> Strong ethics involving safety. Ability to learn new methods and apply them in daily routine. Operating knowledge of hand brake, air brake and chock and general knowledge of bus fueling. <br><br> Must possess strong ethics involving safety. Ability to learn new methods and apply them in daily routine. Education, Training and Experience: <br><br> Completion of high school or GED. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. Some ability to communicate in sign language desirable, but not required, for some positions. <br><br> Certificate and License Requirements: Certified in basic First Aid and CPR desirable, but not required. Physical Demands: <br><br> Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. Must bend and reach in awkward positions at time to secure children and equipment. <br><br> Must possess physical and emotional stamina to meet job requirements. Special Requirements: Possible extended day runs. <br><br> Required to attend in-service training. Paid Overtime (Y/N): Yes Duties and Responsibilities: Works with student population with disciplinary issues. <br><br> Is able to lift students for emergency bus evacuation. Must be on the bus at the appropriate time to check equipment and leave on time. Assigns students to seats. <br><br> Observes and responds to students with behavior changes and any other unusual conditions on the bus and implements behavior controls when necessary. Assist a substitute bus operator with directions. Performs bus attendant pre-trip inspection of special equipment. <br><br> Completes paperwork as assigned. Keeps required equipment clean and in good working order. Treats all students and others with respect and compassion. <br><br> Deals in an effective and tactful manner with all students. Assists the bus operator in performing bus evacuation drills. Is calm in an emergency situation and efficiently and quickly evacuates students when needed. <br><br> Performs related work as required.
