About this job:

The Non-CDL Route Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient transport of school-aged children and other authorized personnel safely and efficiently over specified routes to and from schools. Position conducts pre-trip inspections; observes safety regulations and policies; enforces student discipline on the bus; and performs related work.

What You'll Do:

  • Collaborates, interacts with, and communicates with all Transportation personnel regarding routes updates interacts professionally with parents, community, and passengers a customer service oriented approach. Must be able to work flexible shifts in all weather conditions.

  • Ensures that the bus can be operated safely before driving and conducts pre-trip post trip safety inspections as required by district, and state laws to include observing visual defects and checking operating systems to include brakes, horn, lights, and devices. Reports defects or needed repairs to Maintenance. Understand basic mechanical functions.

  • Adheres to directive given by radio dispatch and responds when called over two way radio.

  • Obeys all traffic laws and transportation practices as outlined in the Transportation Department Handbook, School Board Policy and local ordinances.

  • Checks with the dispatcher daily for any changes in normal duties or new student passengers. Keeps assigned time schedules, which may require driving during pre-day light and dusk periods, and makes every effort to be on time while ensuring safety.

  • Transports students with disabilities operating and installing proper special needs equipment (e.g. integrated seats, Besi seat, safety vest), and maintaining current knowledge of assistive equipment use and installation.

  • Represents the Department and District professionally at all times with adherence to applicable dress code. Works collaboratively with Bus Paraprofessionals and school staff.

  • Manages passenger and student behavior using proper department procedures for student management issues to ensure safety.

  • All other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Must be 21 years of age.

  • Highschool Diploma or equivalent Minimum

  • A current and valid State of Colorado drivers' license

  • Must meet District insurability requirements for driving a district vehicle

  • Must meet Colorado Department of Education and FMCSR Part 382 requirements

  • Must pass Department of Transportation physical (DOT)

  • Certification in First Aid / CPR, desired (within 90 Days)

  • The ability to take responsibility for one's own performance

  • Effective communication skills

  • Effectively handle multiple demands and competing deadlines

  • Strong attention to detail

  • High degree of integrity in handling confidential information

  • Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multicultural environment with district and school leaders, faculty, staff and students

  • Work collaboratively with others on a team

  • Aptitude for variety and changing expectations and fast-paced environment

  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local student transportation laws and regulations.

  • Knowledge of (e.g., special needs) preferred.

  • Ability to work effectively as a team member.

  • Ability to multi-task and complete work with frequent interruptions.

  • Ability to communicate in English, in both written and oral formats.

  • Ability to communicate with a diverse student population.

  • Ability to successfully complete all training requirements.

  • Lead for racial and educational excellence and work to dismantle systems of oppression and inequity in our community, along with believing in and supporting all students so they feel seen and heard with access to high quality education.

  • Live and work with a permanent home address in Colorado while working with us.

  • Have the ability with or without accommodations to meet the physical demands of the position.
