Summary:

Bus Drivers are qualified to drive a District-owned bus over designated routes for the purpose of transporting students to and from various school site locations and on special trips. Bus Drivers who are offered expanded services will be assigned to custodial, grounds keeping, warehousing, and general labor to support maintenance specialists.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Bus Driving

  • Drives a regular or specially equipped school bus daily over designated and special routes in compliance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students, and, drives for special events.

  • Inspects bus prior to operation for safety purposes. Cleans windshields and headlights. Cleans the interior and exterior of buses as needed, including, but not limited to, picking up debris, sweeping and mopping floor, and wiping and cleaning upholstery.

  • Services bus with fuel and oil. Performs routine checks of belts, braking, turning signals, and lighting. Inspects hydraulic lifts. Reports problems or equipment malfunctions.

  • Maintains appropriate behavior among students on buses and while the bus is parked at bus stops. Follows District policies regarding the student control and contact with parents and the public.

  • Reports incidents affecting the safety of students. Maintains records of all trips. Files accident reports. Completes accurate records as required by State and federal laws and policies.

  • Attends scheduled safety meetings and continuing education programs. Performs first aid or emergency assistance.

  • May transport students and chaperones on field trips to various locations making departure and arrival time as scheduled.

  • Removes graffiti and other material from bus interiors.

Custodial, Grounds, Warehousing Services and General Labor

  • Cleans, dusts, and disinfects restrooms including floors, stalls, toilets, sinks, urinals, and fixtures. Removes trash and waste. Cleans trash receptacles and replaces liners.

  • Cleans public walkways, entry, and use areas including, but not limited to hallways, stairways, cafeterias, and meeting rooms. Cleans and disinfects drinking fountains, door handles, and door push plates.

  • Sweeps, vacuums, and cleans carpeted and hard surface floors and baseboards, spot cleaning as necessary and wet mopping on a regularly scheduled basis.

  • May participate in heavy cleaning projects such as refinishing of hard floors and tiled areas and shampooing of carpets and fabric furniture.

  • May participate in set up and take down of seating and equipment for events, including theater and gymnasium use.

  • May perform 'helper' duties of a Maintenance Specialist I on an intermittent basis such as and not limited to, minor repair, servicing and maintenance to structures and fixtures, plumbing adjustments, oiling of door hinges and glide tracks, and replacing lights.

  • Mows and edges lawns. Trims shrubs and hedges. Operates and cleans power riding lawn mowers, power blowers, and other motorized equipment requiring similar skill.

  • Assists with planting and cultivating of trees, grass, flowers, and shrubs. Spades, applies nutrients, and otherwise prepares grounds for planting.

  • Removes weeds, blows, rakes, and removes trash and debris from walkways, culverts, stairways, roadways, planters, and parking. Maintains in-ground drains and culverts.

  • Unloads, checks, and shelves incoming materials, equipment and supplies. Receives merchandise and unloads trucks using a hand truck or, if certified, a forklift. May deliver inventory to school sites.

  • Completes work order requests for maintenance services, as necessary. Completes departmental forms for internal use.

  • Documents work activities, inspections, unanticipated occurrences, and SDS sheets.

  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the objectives of the position.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and Skills:

  • Requires a complete working knowledge and understanding of safe bus driving practices sufficient to recognize problems and take appropriate action. Requires working knowledge of the operations of specially equipped buses. Requires working knowledge and understanding of State laws, rules and regulations and Education Code sections pertaining to school bus operations and pupil transportation, including those for students requiring accommodations. Requires knowledge of routine equipment servicing. Requires a basic knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial care and routine facilities maintenance. Must have a basic knowledge of work hazards and safe work techniques, including lifting procedures. Requires knowledge of first aid practices. Requires sufficient knowledge of English language to prepare travel and safety logs and prepare work orders. Requires sufficient communication skills to exercise patience and maintain harmony within a work team and with students and parents.

  • Abilities:

  • The position requires the ability to perform all of the duties of the position with minimal supervision. Requires ability to drive a school bus safely and efficiently while keeping to well-established schedules. Requires the ability to read and write sufficiently to perform all of the duties of the position including understanding applicable laws, regulations and codes required. Requires the ability to use special devices and equipment for the transport of students with mobility problems. Requires the ability to maintain order among students, both while driving and at bus stops. Must be able to recognize malfunctions in equipment and take appropriate action. Requires the ability to maintain an assigned vehicle in clean and safe operating condition. Requires the ability to administer first aid to ill or injured students. Must learn designated bus routes, including stops and traffic hazards. Must be able to perform routine servicing. Requires the ability to maintain required records. Requires the ability to work productively with peers, students, parents, and members of the general public.

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED.

  • Successful completion of 20 hours of classroom instruction related to skills, regulations, and safety requirements for driving a school bus and successful completion of 20 hours of instruction behind the wheel of a school bus.

  • May require one year of custodial or maintenance experience.

Licenses and Certificates:

  • Requires valid Commercial Class A or B Driver's License;

  • Medical examination card;

  • Valid California Special Driver Certificate with P&S Endorsements.

  • Valid First Aid Certification (if #6 restriction)

Additional Requirement:

  • Must pass an approved pre-placement medical assessment.

  • Subject to random drug testing.

Salary and Terms of Service:

Salary range (34) $22.29 - $27.01per hour, eight (8) steps, eight (8) hours per day and five (5) days per week (M-F). Work schedule is eligible for 10% split differential compensation. Holidays, sick leave and vacation benefits. Prepaid family dental, medical, and vision insurance, prepaid life insurance plan for employee only.
