GENERAL SUMMARY Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Transportation, operate a school bus over designated routes practicing non-aggressive defensive driving techniques in accordance with regulations and laws relating to pupil transportation in California, following specified time schedules, and perform other duties directly related to this job description. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Knowledge of the provisions of applicable state and federal laws, California Motor Vehicle Code, the Education Code, and District policies applicable to the operation of vehicles in transporting school children; safe driving practices.
Operates a Type I and Type II school bus and other district vehicles with proficiency. With appropriate training may be required to operate a mechanized wheelchair lift. Complete a daily bus safety inspection prior to initial use of the vehicle to ensure that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition at all times.
Completes inspection report noting deficiencies and notifies the appropriate personnel. Operates a two-way radio, knowledge of radio codes and proper usage. Transports students, staff and chaperones on study and athletic trips to various locations making arrival and departure times as scheduled.
During emergencies choosing the best route while transporting students, staff, parents, and/or chaperones. Supervises loading and unloading of students. Shall assist if required in the loading and unloading of physically handicapped students.
Enforce District policy and procedures in maintaining discipline on buses. Provide bus evacuation and safety instruction to students and staff. Provide emergency first aid as required.
Supervises and assists in the loading and unloading of equipment and cargo. Maintains cleanliness of windows and interior of bus, sweep and mop bus floor as needed, washes bus exterior, and fuels bus as necessary. Checks fluid level in engine compartment and adds necessary fluids.
Learns designated bus routes, bus stops, and district traffic hazards. Prepares reports of mileage, passengers carried, and hours worked. Issues discipline reports to site administrators.
May deliver intradistrict mail. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED Ability to see and read, with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation. Ability to convey detailed spoken instructions accurately, loudly or quickly.
Ability to enter and exit emergency doors. Comfortable with students of multiple ethnicities, cultural values, behavioral and physical handicaps. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to interpret rules, regulations, laws and policies governing the District. Ability to maintain order among children on a school bus. Ability to read maps.
Skill in working with the public and school community. Professional demeanor that establishes a desirable example for students. WORKING CONDITIONS Must have the physical skills/abilities/faculties to allow the full operation of any type and size of school bus that may be operated for the transportation of pupils on scheduled routes and study trips.
Light to moderate physical effort for extended periods of time; frequent sitting or standing; periodic lifting in excess of 50 pounds. Moderate to high stress level. Primarily school bus and school environment.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Work environment, indoors and outdoors. Temperature - usually normal climate, occasional adverse weather and conditions. Chemical exposure - occasional: gasoline, oil, solvents, etc.
CONTACTS Daily contact with students and District staff. Occasional contacts with parents, community members and outside agency personnel. OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATES/LICENSES High school diploma or equivalent.
A valid Class "A" or Class "B" California driver's license with a "P" and "S" endorsements. A valid California school bus driver's certificate and a valid medical certificate. A valid First Aid certification.
Drivers will participate in the District's random alcohol and controlled substance testing program per Federal Regulations. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Dexterity and physical condition to maintain a rigorous work schedule and meet standards of physical and mental health.
