THEPOSITION

The City of Santa Barbara Community Development Departmentis seeking a motivated Building Permit Technician.This position is responsible for theprocessing of building permit applications, issuing permits, coordinating plan check routing and record keeping. This position will be the Building & Safety Division's point of contact for the public at our public counter, and perform other work as required.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry-level position into the Building & Safety Division of the Community Development Department. Positions in this class are characterized by the ability to acquire sufficient knowledge to perform minor inspections and/or plan checks and provide assistance to building inspection and plan check personnel through the handling and filing of building documents and plans. Incumbents respond to routing questions requiring limited analysis and interpretation of building and related codes.

Knowledgeof:

  • Modern office procedures, methods and equipment.

  • Basic construction terminology, techniques and materials.

  • Record keeping and filing procedures.

Ability to:

  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

  • Explain and collect technical and general building information.

  • Type with speed and accuracy.

  • Learn to use computerized permit system, Windows based software and other required computer applications.

  • Learn building and related codes and ordinances and respond to routine inquiries.

  • Learn to read and interpret construction plans.

  • Maintain accurate and well-organized records and files.

  • Handle public inquiries with tact and accuracy.

  • Perform limited variety of regular assignments without instructions according to established procedures.

  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education and/or Training:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by building inspection, plan check, and/or relevant specialized clerical training or experience.

Computerized permit processing experience and possession of the Permit Technician Certificate from the ICC are highly desirable.

License, Certificate and/or Other Requirements:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California state driver's license.

Possession of, within 18 months of hire, the Permit Technician Certificate from ICC.
