Under the general direction of the Director of Community Development, this job is primarily responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising the work of building and code compliance inspectors and conducting technical reviews of building/site plans and other design and construction documents to ensure compliance with City development ordinances and building codes. This position also recommends the adoption of codes, policies, and standards to address community needs and routinely interacts with members of the public and other governmental officials.

A Day in the Life:

  • Conducts technical reviews of construction plans/documents to ensure compliance with adopted building and zoning codes.

  • Interprets and explains laws, ordinances, and code provisions to architects, engineers, designers, contractors, and the general public.

  • Develops policies and procedures to ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Selects, trains, motivates and evaluates staff in accordance with City policies.

  • Investigates and responds to complaints regarding illegal construction, safety, or hazardous conditions. Testifies in court and before the governing body as required.

  • Oversees and develops the division's recordkeeping systems for permits, inspection reports, violations and correspondence with affected parties.

  • Recommends and implements divisional goals, objectives, projects and programs that are aligned with community needs; determines operational priorities and resolves resourcing issues.

  • Represents the City and serves as the primary staff liaison to the Building Trades Board

  • Performs all other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.

What You Will Need to be Successful:

Education: Associate Degree in Construction Management or other closely related field is required; Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in architecture, construction science or other closely related field is preferred.

Experience: 5+ years progressively responsible experience as a Building Official or Building Inspector including at least 2 years' experience in a supervisory or lead capacity.

Certifications/License: Must possess at time of hire a minimum of 3 ICC Residential and/or Commercial certifications in adopted building code areas: mechanical, plumbing, electrical, structural, or life safety. Must also possess a Certified Building Official certification from the International Code Council within 6 months of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License and acceptable driving record.
