Are you ready to take the helm of building safety and development in one of the most vibrant cities in Kansas? The City of Hutchinson is seeking an experienced and dynamic Building Official to lead our efforts in ensuring top-notch construction standards and facilitating innovative urban growth.

About the Role: As the Building Official, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing all building inspection, code enforcement, and plan review activities.

You will ensure that all construction projects, from cutting-edge commercial developments to charming residential homes, meet or exceed safety and building code standards. Your expertise will help shape the skyline of Hutchinson, safeguarding the well-being of our community while fostering economic development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Community Development Division, including supervising inspection staff and administrative personnel.

  • Oversee plan reviews, permit issuance, and inspection processes to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal codes.

  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, contractors, and property owners to provide guidance and resolve construction-related issues.

  • Stay current with industry trends and regulatory changes, implementing best practices and new technologies to improve efficiency and service delivery.

  • Develop and enforce policies and procedures that enhance public safety and streamline building processes.

  • Serve as a key advisor to city officials on building and safety matters, contributing to strategic planning and community development initiatives.

What You Will Need to be Successful:

Education: Associate Degree in Construction Management or other closely related field is required; Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in architecture, construction science or other closely related field is preferred.

Experience: 5+ years progressively responsible experience as a Building Official or Building Inspector including at least 2 years' experience in a supervisory or lead capacity.

Certifications/License: Must possess at time of hire a minimum of 3 ICC Residential and/or Commercial certifications in adopted building code areas: mechanical, plumbing, electrical, structural, or life safety.

Must also possess a Certified Building Official certification from the International Code Council within 6 months of hire. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License and acceptable driving record.
