GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Maintenance and renovation of County buildings in the areas of electrical, plumbing, general carpentry, painting and mechanical equipment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Perform general and specialized tasks in the construction, renovation, installation and repair of buildings, equipment, apparatus and facilities.

Perform plumbing work in repairing and replacing plumbing fixtures.

Repair, replace or clean broken lines or valves. Unclogs sinks and toilets.

Perform general carpentry work. Replace electric fixtures, bulbs, ballasts, wall receptacles, and breakers. Repair audio systems, low voltage systems.

Repair roof leaks, paint exterior and interior of buildings.

Perform repairs or replacement of pumps, motors and related equipment as requested or assigned.

Perform mechanical work on air conditioning and roof equipment, replacing fan motors and pumps, as requested.

Perform related work as requested or assigned.

Prepare, coordinate and implement minor projects.  Including but not limited to contacting vendors, scheduling work, completing work on time.

Assist with moving furniture, setting up for meetings and special events.

Perform cleaning activities both inside and outside facilities including but not limited to emptying trash receptacles.

Ability to be utilized throughout various County buildings.

Understand and comply with the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners employee handbook and other established policies and procedures.

Perform other job-related functions as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

The practices, methods, materials and tools for a variety of the building trades.

Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades.

Ability to:

Work from blueprints, rough sketches, oral and written instructions.

Complete in a timely manner all necessary paperwork for each completed job.

Remain on task and on schedule.

Read and understand and follow Material Safety Data Sheets and use of safety equipment when needed.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees.

Work overtime, nights, weekends and in emergency situations as needed.

Moderate computer skills related to email and data entry

Skills:

Use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the proper trades to which assigned.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Constant walking, standing, use of hands and feet, fingers, legs, reaching above shoulders, kneeling, bending and squatting.

Frequent heavy lifting (up to 75lbs.). Very frequent light lifting (50lbs or less). Frequent light carrying (30lbs. or less). Good balance, eye/hand coordination, near and far vision and good hearing. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

ENVIONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Exposure includes but is not limited to dust and occasional hazardous chemicals. Exposure to adverse outside working conditions of cold, heat, humidity and rain.

WORK HAZARDS:  Work includes utilizing chemicals associated with the building trades. Physical demand and risk associated with heavy lifting, climbing ladders and scaffolding, and the use of power tools.

SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED: Eye protection, rubber gloves, face masks, respirators, disposable protective suits, ear muffs and shoes with good gripping soles to provide adequate traction for climbing and walking on wet surfaces. Auto safety belt.

County employees are considered essential personnel in providing and continuing services to our community during and following a disaster, such as a hurricane, or in other emergency situations. As a requirement of County employment, County employees are subject to being required to remain at work during an event, respond to a recall immediately following an event and/or immediately reporting to work when an all clear is declared by the County Administrator.  During these types of events, County employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Graduation from high school or possession of state GED.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of three (3) years' experience in building maintenance and in more than one of the building trades. Comparable amount of training may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

NOTE: An equivalent combination of experience/training and/or experience may be substituted to meet the above noted minimum qualifications.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations: Valid Florida's Driver's License and must maintain a good driving record.

Pay Grade T06

Driving Position - Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 1 background screening.
