GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs semi-skilled work in the mechanical maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment for the Building Services Department.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs a variety of tasks ranging from routine maintenance activities to assignments requiring the application of knowledge acquired from on-the-job training. Work includes assisting journeyman level plumbers, electricians, and HVAC mechanics in their respective areas of responsibilities. Guidance and instruction in the principles and techniques involved are received from a journey tradesman. Work is performed under varying degrees of supervision, depending on abilities of the incumbent, and is evaluated through observation and inspection of completed work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Installs ballasts and light tubes in fluorescent lights; replaces receptacles, switches, and bulbs in County buildings.
Assists in the repair of drains and plumbing lines and in the installation and repair of toilets, wash basins, and water coolers.
Assists in running conduit and pulling wire; hangs light fixtures.
Changes filters in air-conditioning units and assists in the repair of air-conditioning equipment.
Assists in the repair of furnaces and heating systems; checks and adds chemicals to the boilers when tests indicate such a need.
Performs related work as assigned.
RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of the practices, methods, and tools associated with mechanical and maintenance trades.
Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions peculiar to various mechanical maintenance trades.
Ability to understand simple sketches, penciled layouts, and rough plans associated with building maintenance and repair work.
Some skill in the use of a wide range of hand tools and shop equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduate or GED and one year experience in general mechanical maintenance and repair work.
Special Requirement:
Valid driver's license required.
Subject to overtime, calls back to work for urgent/emergency situations and work during inclement weather.
Physical Demands
Must be able to perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking and repetitive motions. Heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work Conditions
Work is performed inside and out in varying conditions including loud noise. Hazards may include occasional exposure to health risk of infection when cleaning up body fluids.
Driving is Essential
Driving is an essential requirement of this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
