DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

This position is responsible for inspecting buildings to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances. Responsibilities may include performing inspections for construction and repair of buildings; reviewing construction plans; and responding to various inquiries from the public.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.
Inspects the construction, alteration, and repair of buildings for compliance with codes, ordinances, and approved building plans and specifications; enforces codes and ordinances.
Reviews building plans for compliance with codes and ordinances; approves or rejects plans based on findings.
Inspects residential and commercial properties for compliance with codes and ordinances; approves or denies re-occupancy of properties; prepares suggestions for resolving non-compliance issues.
Responds to code interpretation, building permit, and related inquiries from residents, contractors, and others.
Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance, including attendance at required meetings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
KNOWLEDGE:
Applicable codes and ordinances;
Computers and related software;
Inspection principles;
Construction methods and practices;
Customer service principles;
Building plan requirements.
SKILLS:
Interpreting plans and specifications;
Conducting inspections;
Providing customer service;
Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and others sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, talking, hearing, and seeing.
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING/LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
Associate's degree and 1 year of related experience; or, all required certification(s) and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:
Act 407 Registration
Valid State of Michigan driver's license
POST-EMPLOYMENT OFFER REQUIREMENTS:
Satisfactory completion of background check and a pre-employment physical and drug screen that tests for illegal drugs as defined by the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act.
All appointees are subject to a one-year probationary period.
