A civil engineering consulting firm engaged in a variety of multi-disciplined projects and specializing in public works and building and safety services is seeking Building Inspectors. The majority of our clients are government agencies, whom we assist with plan review and building inspection services.

We are currently seeking a Building Inspector to inspect work for compliance with municipal codes and regulations governing building construction, alteration, and repair. Candidates should have the following:


Work involves responsibility for inspecting a variety of buildings and construction projects to determine whether plans, workmanship, and materials conform with legally established requirements. The inspector will work independently on field inspections and must make decisions exercising technical judgment. Responsibilities may include:

  • Inspecting new construction for possession of permits;

  • Checking for conformity with building codes and approved plans and specification requirements

  • Checking for possession of permit and conformity to law, all alterations and major repairs, additions, and minor repairs to building and other structures.

  • Performing business occupancy inspections, check for proper license and proper building construction.

  • Inspecting old and dangerous structures which may be subject to condemnation, especially for structural, safety, and other hazards; condemns structures which jeopardize public health, safety, and welfare.

  • Interpreting and explaining building ordinances, codes, and regulations to builders, contractors, home owner, and other interested parties.

  • Analyzing applicable codes, standards and project contract documents and monitors construction activities to ensure compliance with contract documents;

  • Maintaining or preparing a variety of records, including daily/weekly progress reports, material accounting records, change orders and record drawings;

  • Reviewing new projects for constructability;

  • Preparing monthly progress payment quantities/requests;

  • Performing and/or evaluating tests and inspections

  • Providing general inspection on all contractor and subcontractor work to assure a safe and workmanlike operation;

  • Monitoring contractors' compliance with approved Quality Control Plan;

  • Making recommendations for improvements to standard construction QC provisions as they apply in the field; and assuring compliance with approved submittals.

  • Perform related work as required.


  • Experience at the journeyman level in a wide variety of skilled residential and commercial construction, and graduation from high school.

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques involved in building construction, repair, and alteration.

  • Considerable knowledge of possible defects and flaws in building construction, and of effective corrective measures.

  • Considerable knowledge of all regulations and laws relating to building construction and zoning.

  • Ability to detect and locate defective workmanship and materials and to ascertain the stage of construction when defects are most easily found and remedied.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, craftsmen, building owners, contractors, and the general public.

  • Ability to understand and work from plans, drawings, and diagrams.

  • Ability to present ideas effectively, orally and in writing.


  • ICC certified Combination Residential and Commercial Building Inspector. Please do not submit your resume if you do not have or cannot obtain this certification within the next 3-6 months.

  • Three (3) years of building inspection experience in a building and safety services environment for residential and commercial improvements.

This is an opportunity to work with experienced engineers dedicated to working on civil and technical engineering and construction management. </p><p><br></p><p>this position may include but not limited to: </p><ul> <li>Attends pre-construction meetings </li> <li>Prepares a written daily report documenting construction activities, including but not limited to: contractor labor, equipment, daily construction progress, project site visitors, non-conforming work, safety issues, traffic control, field measured quantiles, field discussions with the contractor and public, takes daily project photos, change order work performed, and weather.</li> <li>Prepare a timesheet daily which records all hours worked, along with vacation, holidays, and sick leave taken.</li> <li>Consults with Resident Engineers, Bridge Engineers, Project Engineers, other project representatives, and contractors' superintendents on work progress and construction problems. </li> <li>Prepares quantity calculation sheets to support monthly progress payments to construction contractors.</li> <li>Coordinates field testing of construction materials and construction surveys.</li> <li>Coordinates communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.</li> <li>Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges and related highway structures and/or airport improvements in accordance with plans and specifications.</li> <li>Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans for compliance with approved safety standards</li> <li>Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.</li> <li>Performs construction record-keeping activities; recommends payments to contractors; prepares reports.</li> <li>Trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.</li> <li>Documents work progress and issues arising throughout scope of project.</li> <li>Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.</li> <li>Must be familiar with construction inspection techniques associated with the construction of roadways, highways, bridges, light rail, heavy rail, airports, utilities, marine facilities, ports, and other infrastructure facilities, when required by their current assignments.</li> <li>Must be familiar with regulatory requirements such as CalOsha, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), US Department of Fish and Wildlife, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Army Corp of Engineers, Regional Water Quality Control Boards, and other regulatory agencies as required.</li> </ul><p><strong>Requirements</strong></p><ul> <li>2 - 4 years construction Inspector required. </li> <li>Strong communication, verbal and written are required.</li> <li>Basic computer skills required.
