Position Summary:

The Building Engineer position within the Facilities department at Bastyr University is responsible for the general maintenance and repair of buildings, structures, and equipment. They perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks to ensure the proper functioning of campus facilities. The Building Engineer works under the supervision of the Director of Facilities and Safety and is expected to adhere to departmental procedures and guidelines while reporting any complex or unusual maintenance issues.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Perform general repairs and maintenance, including painting, plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, and other related tasks.

  • Build, repair, and install various building components such as counters, cabinets, partitions, doors, and trim.

  • Replace damaged ceiling, floor, and wall coverings, as well as electrical wiring, switches, outlets, and fixtures.

  • Conduct plumbing repairs, including unclogging drains, fixing faucets, valves, toilets, and other minor plumbing-related tasks.

  • Carry out painting, patching, and drywall repair to maintain the aesthetic appearance of buildings.

  • Assist with furniture assembly, delivery, and setup for classes, events, and other activities.

  • Monitor and maintain the proper functioning of chillers, boilers, lighting, and other equipment.

  • Conduct regular inspections of campus buildings to identify and address maintenance issues promptly.

  • Collaborate with other departments and assist in vehicle and equipment repairs when needed.

  • Complete assigned tasks, utilize email and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), and provide regular updates on work progress.

  • Ensure compliance with safety procedures and regulations, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

  • Provide exceptional customer service, maintain positive interpersonal skills, and effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including operating heavy equipment and attending training courses as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient knowledge of Fire Tube boilers, including associated equipment functions.

  • Familiarity with painting, door hardware, appliances, carpentry, and mechanical systems.

  • Mechanical aptitude and mathematical skills.

  • Experience in at least one trade within Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems.

  • Valid Washington driver's license.

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively within a team.

  • Positive attitude and customer-centered mindset.

  • Ability to work with various personality types and find win-win solutions.

  • Goal-oriented with the ability to prioritize tasks and provide suggestions for work improvements.

  • Knowledge of ASME codes for boiler operations and maintenance, NEC and NFPA 70E for electrical repairs, and HVAC Technician Certification for HVAC systems.

  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and repair various systems and equipment.

  • Proficient in using computer applications, including the Microsoft Office Suite and CMMS.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of maintenance experience, preferably in residential, commercial, or industrial environments.

  • Customer service experience, including progressively responsible tasks in maintenance services.

  • One year of verifiable recent maintenance experience.

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Associates degree and/or trade school education is preferred.
