The individual in this position supervises the day to day work of the Building and Grounds Technician staff to include monitoring work quality, timeliness of completion, and adherence to procedures. This will include unannounced inspections after normal hours. Monitors timesheets, completes merit appraisals and documents performance for Building & Grounds PM staff.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for coordinating physical set-ups and special event furniture needs in response torequests from Scheduling and Conference Services for on and off-campus group activities (e.g. Project Graduation, student events.) Attends coordination meetings for Tie Downs and emergency planning.

  • Provides information to the Physical Plant Director as to the campus conditions during weather events or other emergencies for the purpose of determining the need for campus closings. Responsible for assuring campus roads, walks, and landscaping are kept clean and with a high degree of "curb appeal." Responsible to maintain road signage and other exterior signs.

  • Monitors, updates, and manages the Physical Plant work order system with regard to B&G, ensuring work orders are distributed, acted upon, and closed out properly.

  • Oversees the management of all custodial supplies including maintenance of sufficient inventory, disbursement to PM staff, and monitoring rates of use. Provides input to planning process with respect to manning and equipment requirements associated with the introduction of new buildings.

  • Administers buildings and grounds budget by accurately tracking expenses and processing paperwork so vendors are properly paid and budget is not overspent.

  • Responsible for developing and implementing standards of cleanliness along with cleaning frequencies for assigned buildings on (La Plata, CTRA Driving Range, Hughesville (REGIS), Indian Head (Velocity Center) campuses. Monitors building service and grounds maintenance contractors assuring completeness of work.

  • Serves as the main point of contact for La Plata Campus snow and ice removal efforts including ensuring that adequate Buildings and Grounds staff are present to provide early and safe passage through the campus for all vehicles and foot traffic. Coordinates with PSD to provide additional safety/security coverage during emergencies or special events.

  • Responsible for training personnel on the safe operation, repair and maintenance of all equipment to include but not limited to: buffers, extractors, vacuums. Maintains (SDS) files, tracks training and ensures employees understand and comply with the proper use of chemicals and personal protective equipment.

  • On call in accordance with HRD Policy 1103 - Compensation & Time Sheet Recording.

Minimum Education and Training

  • Associates degree or High School diploma with three years' experience in building services.

  • Four years (two of which must be in a supervisory capacity) experience in an institutional or commercial setting that has provided the knowledge of procedures for proper use of equipment.

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to use snow removal equipment.

  • Ability to translate and use hazardous and toxic chemical (Safety Data Sheets).

  • Maintain a valid Maryland driver's license and maintain insurability under the college vehicle liability insurance plan.

  • Certified, or can successfully complete a CPR/AED course and a stand-alone first-aid course.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and give direction to others, and associated responsibilities.

  • Ability to lift 75 pounds.

Physical Requirements:

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Physical Working Environment:

Exposure to a variety of industrial hazardous/toxic chemical cleaning agents. Prolonged standing and exposure of adverse weather conditions year-round.
