Under the direction of the Budget Manager, this role will support the budget, financial planning and reporting for academic affairs.

Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Create and reconcile the annual budget plan. Conduct research and analysis as needed during the annual budget process to ensure timely submission of the new budget.

  • Prepare monthly variance reports for budget vs. actuals and provide financial analysis explanations. Analyze data and report on projections based on actual trends and provide sound business recommendations for variances or adjustments.

  • Develop budget models and analyze academic program financial data including enrollment data, program break-even analysis, contract review process, and various other academic program models.

  • Process budget amendments, journal entries, and accounting adjustments. Set up new accounts, create ad-hoc reports and provide analysis.

  • Prepare and communicate correspondence (confidential and non-confidential), memoranda, forms, reports, and other documents related to the work of the budget office such as financial certifications, conflict of interest form, budget cycle planning and year end timelines/deadlines, and interim summary memos.

  • Monitor department spending activities to ensure that it is within the budget. Periodically inform department heads on the status of their budget and other funds.

  • Working closely with departments and Controller's Office to complete the year-end process. Including preparing deferrals and accruals and completing year-end variance analysis.

  • Manage and maintain one-time funding commitments from Provost to colleges and schools, tracking internal grants, processing chair and director stipends, and academic equipment budget transfers. Provide regular updates and budget reports to program and fund managers.

  • Prepare and conduct budget and policy training. Review and approve expense reports and payment requests.

  • Be well versed and stay informed of the University policies and procedures to ensure compliance. Maintaining accurate and consistent records related to annual budget and year end cycle.

  • Assist in managing budget office service desk and replying to low level inquiries.

  • Identify and implement business process improvements.

  • Other duties as assigned or requested.

Requisite Qualifications

  • Typically a Bachelors Degree in accounting with corresponding professional experience, or equivalent experience. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.

  • Minimum three years finance or accounting experience in progressively responsible positions which have included accounting (A/P, A/R, General Accounting) and quantitative analysis, financial forecasting and budgeting.

  • Demonstrated strong quantitative, analytical, report writing and financial modeling skills. Skill in writing concise, logical, and grammatically correct correspondence and reports.

  • Demonstrated computer competency and advance knowledge of the MS Word, Excel and Power Point. Experience with Workday and other financial analysis programs.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of: Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and variance analysis and reporting.

  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries. Ability to work with Department Heads and Program Directors to review their budgets. Excellent customer service and time management skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, use initiative, follow through, and get the job done well and in a timely manner.

  • Project management skills involving complex variables and competing project deadlines.

Salary range

$66,560.00 - $75,200.00 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
