As a Bridge Crew Leader, you will use our foundational drivers to play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect communities and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Identify bridge maintenance needs develop schedules and plan work.

  • Determine resources and materials needed for repair or construction, working with staff to obtain for project implementation.

  • As a working crew leader, will perform preventative and restorative structural maintenance activities on large culverts, bridge structures, and other concrete structures.

  • Place and finish concrete, erect steel beam bridges and install timber and concrete bridge decks.

  • Perform manual labor in forming footers, abutments, and wing walls. Work is accomplished over, in, and around water, in heavy traffic, and from scaffolding. Requires working at heights, using proper fall protection.

  • Operate a 25-ton dump truck, rubber tire front-end loader, backhoes, truck-mounted crane, forklift, and various types of hand/power tools.

  • Conduct preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment/tools.

  • Monitor operations for safety and compliance with standards; maintain work accomplishment records and serve as supervisor as needed.

  • Work during emergencies including bridge strikes, incident management, snow removal, and hurricane preparedness. Performance of duties requires work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Skill in carpentry, concrete forming, and finishing, and welding.

  • Skill and experience in operating construction-related equipment, and hand and power tools.

  • Knowledge of highway/bridge maintenance methods and safety practices.

  • Basic experience in leading, directing, and training others.

  • Basic knowledge of inventory procedures and skill in the use of computers and

software applications.

  • Skilled in performing minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment and power tools.

  • Experience in performing heavy manual labor.

  • Capability to conduct basic math calculations to measure and layout constructed elements on bridges and culverts.

  • Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans.

  • Ability to obtain flagging certification.

  • Possess a valid driver's license. Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License within 11 months of employment. See below for more details.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience in the maintenance and/or construction of roadways, bridges, facilities, or comparable large-scale construction projects.

  • Experience preparing reports and keeping records.

  • Valid Class A CDL

  • Experience in fabrication or welding steel components.

  • Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements.

Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
