Sierra Nevada Brewers are responsible for the production of our award-winning beers and the operation of our state-of-the-art brewery. The Brewer Technician shares Sierra Nevada's commitments to quality, safety, brewery sanitation, best practices, and continuous improvement. The Brewer Technician will potentially work in all areas of the Brewing Department (Brewing, Cellar, and Filtration) and demonstrates flexibility in supporting all shifts in a 24-hour operation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Stages materials and prepares for brewing according to set recipes and schedules

  • Actively monitors brewing processes on manual and automated systems while maintaining quality standards and specifications set by SNBC

  • Responsible for performance and reporting of product and equipment on shift

  • Based on acceptable limits, reacts appropriately when limits are exceeded, and escalates abnormalities to the supervisor

  • Follows all SOPs and best practices for brewing operations (Brewing, Cellar, and Filtration) in a safe and efficient manner

  • Maintains an organized, sanitary, and safe work area by cleaning up messes quickly after created, keeping tools in appropriate places after use, and sterilizing any item that may contact product immediately after use

  • Wears all appropriate PPE for job being performed

  • Performs CIP of brewing vessels, tanks, process lines, fermenters, centrifuges, filters and yeast brinks including assembly and disassembly of process lines and loops. Mixes and uses chemicals safely (uses the appropriate chemical for the task, uses cleaning equipment safely, safely carries buckets with chemicals)

  • Performs basic maintenance and troubleshooting of process equipment

  • Performs light duty mechanical adjustments; manually or with small hand tools

  • Communicates and works in conjunction with other departments (Quality, Packaging, Maintenance, etc.) as necessary to meet department objectives

  • Obtains a valid forklift license (if requested) and operates a forklift

  • Performs miscellaneous tasks and projects as directed by Brewing Supervisor

Education & Experience

  • Diploma/Certificate in Brewing/Fermentation Science or related field from an accredited institution, or a combination of professional education and two years of professional brewing experience is required.

  • Two years professional experience in the areas of Brewing, Cellar, and Filtration is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Comprehensive understanding of raw materials handling, brewhouse operations, cellar management, and filtration procedures

  • Understanding of COP, CIP, sanitation and sterilization techniques

  • Understanding of specific beer process terminologies

  • The skill to quickly assess the status of operations and troubleshoot processes strongly desired

  • A demonstrated ability to work with automated processes interface, as well as manual brewery operations is strongly desired

  • A demonstrated ability to multitask while maintaining a strong attention to detail is essential

  • A demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in a cross-functional, cross-departmental team environment

  • A demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and make critical decisions

  • Ability to accurately follow SOPs

  • Strong work ethic and high level of professionalism

Travel

  • Occasional travel opportunities will be available for training and/or event participation. Not required.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Additional REQUIREMENTS

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a post offer, pre-employment background check

  • Work schedule requires the ability to rotate through three shifts (early, swing, and night shifts), including weekends and holidays

This role focuses on all aspects of Organic Estate Hop production from planning, cultivating, and harvesting to chemical applications and more. This role is designed to introduce you to our organic and sustainable agricultural practices, the challenges we face with our Estate Hop Yard, the ideas we have and the resources to get there. To be successful in this role you need a strong crop production foundation, a desire to learn from the team and a passion for the Sierra Nevada brand. Please Note: The anticipated schedule for this position will be weekdays 5 AM - 1:30 PM in summer, 6 AM - 2:30 PM through winter and seasonal variation depending on crop and department needs. ESSENTIAL DUTIES * This position will be responsible for accomplishing daily/weekly work load in the Estate Hop yards. * Works with Agriculture Manager and brewing department to determine acreage to be farmed, and varieties and quantities to be grown. Maintains productive communication with ag department management and brewers for hop needs/delivery. * Attaches farm implements such as chisel, disc, Weed Badger, air blast sprayer, and Soller harvester to tractor. Operates tractor in and around hop yards to till soil and plant and cultivate crops. * Drives and operates farm machinery to till soil, plant cover crops, apply organic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, and oversees hop harvesting. * Maintains irrigation systems and irrigates hop yards. * Assists in coordination of any necessary hop field infrastructure and maintenance. * Demonstrates and explains farm work techniques and safety regulations to new workers. * Lubricates, adjusts, and makes minor repairs on farm machinery, implements and equipment. * Assists in decision making concerning when and how to transplant, cultivate, fertilize, irrigate, and harvest the Organic Estate Hops. * Assists in selection and purchase of planting stock and farm machinery, implements, and supplies as needed. * Acts as back up in other Agriculture team roles, as needed. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge, Skills & Abilities * A consistently positive attitude and ability to work closely with agriculture department management and brewing department employees, and other departments involved in our team atmosphere. * Ability to maintain farm area aesthetics with help of interns/staff * Ability to keep equipment cleaned after use * Ability to learn hop yard yearly work to meet brewing and field health needs * Ability to work alone or with crew members with minimal supervision * Ability to learn about organic input use as related to hop yard needs * Knowledge of irrigation timers/system to be able to make adjustments, changes and repairs * Ability to operate power tools, forklifts, personnel lifts, back-hoe, tractors, and implements with minimal supervision and in a safe manner * Ability to work flexible hours during peak production and harvest times Education & Experience * Previous experience in crop production, including chemical applications preferred * Experience with organic practices preferred * Hands on hop yard production experience preferred * Previous experience with tractor/heavy equipment required * A degree in agriculture preferred * Agriculture chemical application certification preferred * Preference will be given to qualified candidate who currently holds either a valid Agriculture chemical application certification or qualified applicator license * Must obtain a qualified applicator license within 12 months of start date (training materials are available and exam fees are covered) Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
