Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of experience in the maintenance, repair, or calibration of electronic or computerdevices, components, networks and/or systems.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

An associate degree in an information technology or an electronics field will substitute for the two years of required experience.

Training in a vocational-technical school or military institute in an information technology, or electronics field will substitute for the required experience on the basis of one year of training for one year of experience.

College training with at least six semester hours per year in an information technology, or electronics field will substitute for the experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

Function of Work:

To obtain the certification as required by law to become a qualified breath analysis instructor, technician, and forensic expert.

Level of Work:

Entry.

Supervision Received:

Close from a Breath Analysis Supervisor or agency official of higher grade.

Supervision Exercised:

None.

Location of Work:

Department of Public Safety and Corrections (DPSC), Public Safety Services, Office of State Police.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from that of Breath Analysis Instructor Specialist by its role as an apprentice seeking manufacturers' certifications, learning the operation and legal limitations of each type and model of breath analysis equipment used statewide, and successful completion of the Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Instructor Course.

Examples of Work

Installs breath analysis equipment.

Analyzes, calibrates, tests, modifies, and repairs all breath analysis equipment pursuant to federal and state laws and regulations.

Attends manufacturers courses and other courses on the technical and operational aspects of breath analysis equipment.

Compiles information on all manufactured breath analysis equipment.

Studies and practices operational procedures in the use of breath analysis equipment.

Repairs breath analysis equipment.

Uses wet bath simulators, oscilloscopes, ampoules, gas chromatograph, Simpson Meter, and infrared testing instrumentation.

Prepares reports on all work performed on breath analysis equipment for submission in court and testifies as witness.

Studies court motions and decisions regarding technical and theoretical aspects and functions of breath analysis equipment.

Demonstrates breath analysis equipment and gives talks to interested organizations.

Participates in certification road trips with instruments to insure they are recertified in a timely manner.
