JOB SUMMARY:
The Break Nurse is a licensed professional supervised by the Clinical Supervisor/Clinical, Nurse Manager/Nursing Director. The Break Nurse is accountable for continuing the coordination of patient care and education to the patient and family in accordance with the standards, policies, and practices in a compassionate, supportive, and therapeutic environment. These services further the mission of Valley Presbyterian Hospital, which is to provide high quality, cost effective healthcare for the community served by VPH.

Current licensure with the California Board of Registered Nursing
Must successfully complete and maintain BLS and ACLS certification
Must successfully complete and maintain LA City Fire Card certification at the time of hire or within the first 30 days of employment.
Must successfully complete and maintain certification for Management of Assaultive Behavior (ex. CPI- Non-violent Crisis Intervention) within 30 days of employment.
NIHSS Certification (Obtain within the first 30 days of employment or transfer)
Annual VPH Critical Care Swank Stroke Education (Obtain within the first 30 days of employment or transfer)

The following job accountabilities are unique to the BN role at VPH:
Receive a brief 3-5min report (or alternate SBAR as designed and assigned by VPH,) accept the Primary Care Nurse's (PCN's) phone and assume care of the patients on his/her assignment.
Assume full responsibility of the patients during the Primary Nurse (PCN's) break and provide the care necessary, including but not limited to, providing Activities of Daily Living, assisting in procedures, transferring/receiving of the patient to/from another department, and speaking with physicians, family members and other members of healthcare team.
Complete any tasks which are due as verified by a review of the patient's orders in the electronic medical record (EMR).
Document break relief in the EMR.
Anticipate breaking nurses in more than one unit based on assignments directed by the Clinical Supervisor, Charge Nurse or Unit Manager.
Inform the Clinical Supervisor or Charge Nurse when there are no remaining nurses (or monitor techs) to break. The duties will then shift to that of CNII nursing duties as assigned by the Clinical Supervisor or Charge Nurse, unit Manager or Operations Supervisor.
Perform is the role only during the times PCNs are in need of meal break relief.
Notify the Clinical Supervisor or Charge Nurse immediately if problems are encountered with providing breaks at the assigned times.
Notify the Clinical Supervisor or Charge Nurse or a designee if the PCN does not return on time from their break. The Break Nurse will give the phone and a handoff report to the Clinical Supervisor or Charge Nurse and proceed to relieve the next nurse. Not doing so will disrupt the remaining nurses' breaks.

Answers phones or pages; may carry a beeper/pager, and/or use a two-way radio.

Salary Range: $44.64 - $69.24 per hour
