General Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Library Department Supervisor, performs the full scope of clerical and para-professional responsibilities in the operation of a Branch Library.

  • Education, Certification, & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Language Skills- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

  • Mathematical Skills- Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

  • Reasoning Ability- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

  • Computer Skills- To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Web Browsers, Outlook 365 Webmail, Polaris Integrated Library System Internet software and Microsoft Word Processing software.

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk and sit. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Essential Functions

The following may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned.

  • Assigns and reviews the work of volunteers in a Branch Library, which includes establishing schedules.
  • Recruits and trains volunteers to perform specific tasks in the Branch Library.
  • Keeps abreast of library policies and procedures especially pertaining to the branch libraries.
  • Suggests procedural and program changes for a Branch Library through participation in workshops and direct consultation with other Library Assistants and the Library Department Supervisor.
  • Implements new and continuing programs and displays in the Branch Library for children, teens and adults.
  • Assists patrons in a courteous and friendly manner while helping them locate materials, access information or use library computers and library materials on-line; provides assistance to impaired patrons by locating material suitable to their needs.
  • Prepares and submits new material order requests (including books and audiovisual titles) to the main library.
  • Notifies patrons of reserved, overdue or damaged materials in an efficient and courteous manner.
  • Collects and tallies payments for overdue items, lost & damaged materials, copier and printer usage, etc.; forwards this money to the Circulation Department Supervisor at the main library.
  • Keeps daily library usage statistics; completes monthly branch statistical forms and submits, along with timesheets, to the Library Department Supervisor.
  • Charges and discharges library materials to patrons; prepares and returns library materials to appropriate location; issues Klamath County Library cards to eligible patrons.
  • Actively encourages and nurtures a strong community support or a Friends of the Library group through personal contact and distribution of information.
  • In cooperation with coworkers, keeps building attractive by maintaining bookshelves, desks, furnishings, and displays. Notifies appropriate authority in case of an emergency.
  • Under direction of the supervisor, performs removal of worn or dated materials from the branch collection.

Salary and Benefits

This is an hourly, non-exempt position, with a wage range of $ 14.31- $ 18.65 per hour. The pay range listed here reflects the FULL pay range for this position for the current fiscal year. Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Work Schedule

This is a part-time position. The normal work schedule is less than 19 hours per week; exact schedules are assigned by management. It is the attendance standard of the employer that all employees be present and on time each shift they are scheduled to work. Full or partial absence during any scheduled shift, arriving late, or leaving early, for whatever reason, may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Time off may be approved if allowed by applicable policies covering illness, injury, or other personal emergency.
