POSITION SUMMARY

Boys and Young Men of Color (BYMOC) Emerging Leaders will work within a team environment to gain experience from the YMCA of Rock River Valley, specifically with the Central Office. The main areas of focus will include Marketing, Finance, Fund Development, and Human Resources. The skills developed will be used in team and individual weekly challenges ending with a culminating special event. YMCA Leadership will use a matrix to determine weekly winner projects. The overall winning project will receive an end of project bonus. Individuals will receive an introduction to the YMCA of Rock River Valley, meeting leaders within the association as well as leaders in the Rockford community. Additional time will be spent engaging with our CEO and COO. BYMOC Emerging Leaders will have opportunities to job shadow, learn skills related to the area of focus, and participate in a weekly challenge presentation.

  • You'll support the commitment of the YMCA to child abuse prevention by:

  • Report any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor.

  • Follow all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children.

  • Report any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor.

  • Complete all child abuse prevention training as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with others to connect with each other and with the YMCA.

  • Participates in daily and weekly activities.

  • Arrives on time and dressed appropriately.

  • Creates a motivating environment that is noncompetitive and inclusive.

  • Facilitates activities, as appropriate, and refer children and adults to other YMCA programs, as deemed beneficial.

  • Marketing Learn about marketing roles and functions within the Y; how to build and protect personal and corporate brands; YMCA branding guidelines; and create a marketing plan for promotions. Begin building marketing assets for promotion of the challenge including social media, videos, flyers, images, etc.

  • Finance Learn about the role of Accounting, Finance and Administration in the Y; the basics of program or event budgeting; differences between Accounting and Finance; the basics of Accounting Practices including Accounts Payable, Receivable, Expense Reports, Cash Management and Financial Reporting; and managing personal finances.

  • Fund Development Participants will learn about the donor cycle and different roles one might play in that cycle; purposes for which we use contributed dollars; to understand the process of raising dollars and importance of following proper procedures; basic script to use when asking for donations; and gain an understanding of your role in stewarding gifts to the Y.

  • Human Resources Participants will learn about the Ys current volunteer model and system; become familiar with legal requirements and obligations for volunteers; learn about cultural competence; use the Ys internal system to identify volunteer roles and post volunteer applications for challenge event; and recruit and coordinate volunteer team for challenge event.

  • CEO/COO- Areas of focus will surround Community Development, Strategic Planning, Board Development, Board Administration, Executive Leadership, and Nonprofit and Business Management

  • Participate in weekly challenges that support a culminating special event. YMCA Leadership will use a matrix to determine weekly winner projects.

  • Prepares before each session including developing plans, reviewing content, and meeting presentation deadlines.

  • Maintains open communication with Teen Program Director surrounding questions with the program or participation challenges.

  • Supports and encourages goal setting on a weekly basis.

  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures; complete incident and accident reports, as necessary.

  • Organizes and puts away needed equipment.

  • Ensures a strong focus on character development and diversity, equity and inclusion throughout programming.

  • Reports damaged equipment or safety hazards promptly.

  • Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Rock River Valley.

QUALIFICATIONS

The YMCA BYMOC Strategy builds on, and invests in, pathways to success to help boys and young men of color reach their full potential. The BYMOC strategy will help to ensure equitable outcomes for boys and young men of color ages 11-17 by removing systemic barriers, providing relevant services and support systems, and creating nurturing environments that promote confidence and growth

  • Must be entering grades 9 through 12 (ages 14-19).

  • Must have strong communication skills

  • Must display strong confidence and be open to constructive feedback

  • Ability to work with a group of others

  • Background checks

  • Work permits

  • Praesidium Academy trainings.

  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations.

  • Proven track record of developing authentic and deepened relationships with others.

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

20 Positions

Part Time Seasonal, Non-Exempt, Grant-Funded

June 24-August 17

Monday-Friday, 10 hours weekly

$15.00 per hour
