A DAY IN THE LIFE AS A TRUCK DRIVER

As a Truck Driver at Goodwill Industries of Northeast Indiana, Inc., you play a vital role in supporting our mission of providing services to the community. Frankly, nothing happens without our Operations Team of Drivers and Material Handlers organizing and transporting donated goods throughout Northeast Indiana!

As a Truck Driver, you will be given an assigned route for the day. Primarily, you will be picking up and delivering goods between the Operation Center and the Stores. A Material Handler will be partnered with you to help load and unload the truck.

At Goodwill, we all help out where needed in support of Goodwill's Mission! If for some reason you're not on the road, you might drive the forklift or help with the baler, or even sort donations. There is always something to do!

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for consideration, you must possess:

  • A valid Chauffeur's license, "For Hire" endorsement or CDL (With Good driving record)

  • Ability to pass a DOT Physical

  • Have at least one (1) year of truck driving experience

  • Be able to lift, push or pull heavy objects

  • Be available to work weekends

WORK SCHEDULE

This full-time position generally works from 8:00 AM- 4:30 PM. Weekend availability is required, but we try to rotate so everyone can enjoy a weekend off now and then.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Drives truck to scheduled points using most efficient route.

  • Loads and unloads truck as directed.

  • Moves articles manually, with hand truck, or with pallet jack.

  • Supervises material handler on route work.

  • Loads and packs material to prevent articles from damage, and to make effective use of space.

  • Keeps records of trips, as required by supervisor.

  • Accepts donations and distributes tax receipts.

  • Performs daily visual inspection of truck and checks truck fluids.

  • Reports malfunction of truck or equipment to supervisor as soon as possible.

  • Keeps required equipment and paperwork in truck or on person at all times.

  • Keeps cab and inside box of truck clean.

  • Heavy lifting, pulling and pushing required.

  • Follows all safety rules and practices.

  • Operates radio to keep in contact with supervisor.

  • Performs all other duties as may be assigned by the Operations & Logistics Director in the process of carrying out the mission of Goodwill Industries.

  • In order to promote customer and donor satisfaction it is mandatory for employees who come in contact with the public to maintain a positive work outlook and to project a pleasant, courteous, and helpful demeanor at all times when dealing with customers, donors, coworkers, and clients.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Reports need for any necessary materials/equipment.

  • Greets customers and donors; answers questions.

  • Operates forklift, if licensed.

  • Operates baler and compactor.

  • Pre-sorts donations. .

  • Ensures walkways, aisles, exits, and safety equipment areas (i.e., fire extinguishers or fire hoses) are clear and unobstructed.

ATTENDANCE

Goodwill, your co-workers, and our customers depend on you to be at work as scheduled.

JOB PERFORMANCE

Reviewed upon initial hire at 30, 60 and 90 days, and annually thereafter, by the Operations and Logistics Director.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for Material Handler while on truck must report issues to supervisor.

EDUCATION

No specialized educational requirements; will train

EXPERIENCE

One year truck driving experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

Must have valid chauffeur or CDL license.

CREDENTIALS/LICENSES/SCREENING REQUIREMENTS

  • Subject to background check.

  • Must have suitable driving record and be determined insurable by Goodwill Industries insurance carrier.

  • Must be able to pass DOT physical.

  • Ability to work within the team concept.

  • Subject to random alcohol and drug testing as specified in the DrugFree Workplace Program.

  • Fully comply with Goodwills Code of Ethics.

COMMUNITY INTERACTION

Contact with customers, donors, and co-workers.

EQUIPMENT

  • Various production equipment including hand truck or dolly, pallet jack, and carts.

  • Gloves and safety glasses.
