PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Strategies 4 Success (S4S) will provide acceleration programming both before and during the school year for exam school admittees who, while academically prepared for exam school content, may require more time to get acclimated to the pace of exam school study. The Office of Opportunity Gaps and other district offices will work in full collaboration with Boston Latin School (BLS) to provide rigorous instruction during the 3 week program, while cultivating positive relationships with students and families.

REPORTS TO: School based S4S Program Director, who will work in close collaboration with the Office of Opportunity Gaps and other Central Divisions/Offices

  • Provide effective, standards-based, culturally responsive instruction to advance student mastery of [enter content/courses] that will contribute to positive student outcomes

  • Use and enhance curriculum materials to provide engaging lessons that incorporate best practices for standards-aligned instruction in [enter content/courses]; collaborate with colleagues to share best practices and strategies

  • Administer pre and post assessments and utilize data to inform instruction

  • Connect with the families consistently; establish and sustain welcoming environment and build positive, authentic working relationships with families and students

  • Supervise and engage with students during transitions and mealtimes to develop a positive and affirming program culture

  • Engage youth Teaching Assistants in supporting instruction and working with students to inspire them to be successful in school, career and life

  • Record accurate daily attendance and perform other tasks as requested


  • Asset-based perspective in service of all students and historically marginalized student populations

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Massachusetts teaching license in the appropriate area

  • Familiarity with Exam Schools and rigorous expectations


  • Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment


  • Current teacher in the Boston Public Schools

  • Teachers of grades 7-12

  • BPS values linguistic diversity and believes that candidates who speak another language bring added value to the classroom, school, and district culture and diversity. Candidates who are fluent in Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, Somali, or Portuguese are strongly encouraged to apply

  • ESL Licensed and/or SEI endorsed

  • Experienced in the implementation of effective Social Emotional Learning and Restorative Practices

TERMS: Stipend position. Stipend position. Anticipated total of hours on-site program time, with an anticipated additional hours for staff meetings and/or PD time [Total of 80 hours]. Payment will be processed as a stipend at the end of the program.

Cognitively demanding tasks and grade-level complex texts will be made accessible for our students. In addition to academics, the program includes enrichment activities focused on STEM, Arts, Leadership Building, and Physical Fitness. The program serves EL students entering grades 9tht-12th. High ESL Summer Academy- Site Coordinator Position Summary: This is a summer program coordinated by OEL in order to support EL acceleration in English language acquisition and development. coordinators hired are expected to adhere to the vision and mission of OEL, which is to provide a culturally and linguistically responsive education with the supports needed to ensure equitable access to opportunities that promote language acquisition, bilingualism, biliteracy, and lifelong learning. Site Coordinators will supervise, guide, assist, and facilitate all classroom responsibilities including the learning environment, lesson plan implementation, assessment, classroom management, parent communication, and classroom observations. For example, if the site operates from 8:00 am-2:00 pm, the coordinator will work from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM with additional pre-planning, Monday to Thursday, beginning on Monday, July 6h, 2021, and ending on Thursday, August 5th, 2020. Job responsibilities will require additional time for site prep, data entry, data analysis, and communications to families * Accepted applicants may be invited to a group interview and are required to participate in all Professional Development. Program Schedule: Please note: We continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 recommendations from the Boston Public Health Commission. Programmatic offerings for 2021 EL Summer Programs are subject to change and may be in remote or in-person/ Hybrid. If you are hired for this role, flexibility is required as you will be expected to work the schedule provided for the entire duration of the program when a final decision is made. Listed below are the proposed schedule variations. Final decisions will be made by the Superintendent prior to the start of the program. Fully Remote: The instructional hours for students will be 4 hours per day, 4 days per week, for 5 weeks from July 6 to August 6, 2021. In-Person/Hybrid The instructional hours for students will be 5 hours per day, 4 days per week, for 5 weeks from July 6 to August 6, 2021. Hours: General hours include a 6 hour workday and additional prep/planning time depending on specific sites. For example, programming at sites could have a duration of 8:00 am - 2 pm or 9:30 am - 3:30 pm, Monday - Thursday. Job responsibilities will require for site prep, data entry, data analysis, and communications to families planning and prep time outside the hours' instruction. The site coordinator's responsibilities include but not limited to the following: Pre-Planning * Participate in the program planning process prior to the start of the program and assist with the staff selection process, student recruitment, and events. * Develop and submit daily schedules for their sites utilizing the operational systems put in place by the Office of English Learners. * OEL will provide train-the-trainer model summer orientation materials to site coordinators. Site coordinators will adapt the materials to host their own summer orientation with their teachers. During Program * Develop strong relationships and work collaboratively with school administration, summer school staff, and parents * Serve as the Summer School's liaison with OELs Central Office. * Be responsible for the implementation of the OEL program model by building a strong team, ensuring positive outcomes and a high-quality experience for the scholars. * Ensure a safe learning environment by following procedures in accordance with the district's Code of Conduct protocol and safety procedures as outlined in the Superintendent's newsletter and other applicable policies. * Manage student attendance, grades, and progress reports, parent contact, and student discipline. * Supervise the administration of district-wide summer assessments to all enrolled students * Schedule and coordinate summer formative and summative assessments. * Oversee the use of data-driven instruction utilizing formative assessments. * Review lesson plans and create 'best practice' instructional strategies. * Implement and maintain a positive behavior management system that is clear and aligns with program goals. * Ensure that all curriculum and supplies are received, distributed, and maintained throughout the program. * Be prepared to substitute or provide adequate coverage during a teacher's and/or teacher assistant's absence. * Coordinate logistics related to field trips if applicable. * Maintain confidentiality of co-workers, students, and families. * Supervise common areas (breakfast, lunches, hallways, transitions) daily. * Facilitate fifteen-minute briefing/check-in sessions each morning with staff. * Coordinate the end of program cultivating activity with artifacts such as presentations, art with a written summary of purposes. After program * Ensure that all relevant information about students are returned to the OEL's Central Office. * Coordinate cleanup of the site and shutting down of the program. Qualifications Required: * Education: Bachelor's Degree * License: ESL License and/or SEI Endorsement * Experience: Demonstrated experience working with English Learners and/or Students with Interrupted Formal Education. * Preferred prior experience as an After School or Summer Site leader. * Authorization: Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment Terms: Schedule: * Pre-Summer: Scheduled planning meetings & PD, Regular check-in w/non-profit partner & school liaison(s), curriculum training, Staff Hiring, and on-site planning. * During Summer: BPS site coordinator required to be on-site every day for all hours of programming for all weeks. * Post-Summer: Some "wrap-up" duties (such as student progress reports, curriculum inventory) occur immediately following the conclusion of summer learning programming. Compensation: * $40/hour. Range of stipend: $5,200-6,000. See below for stipend guidelines. (Stipend includes pre-summer planning & student recruitment/engagement, curriculum planning/training, and summer programming). * Total compensation is set based on hours of work, including professional development, on-site program time, and additional duties. Agreement to site-specific terms is required for hire. * Payroll will be processed on a biweekly basis after receipt of completed timesheets in accordance with the BPS summer payroll schedule.
