Certification/Licensure required:

  • Master's Degree in School Counseling;

  • Certification/Licensure appropriate for this position;

  • Successful experience in student relations, curriculum and instruction, and community relations in a middle school environment.

Preferences:

  • Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the American School Counseling Association Standards including direct and indirect student services (see below);

  • Demonstrate a sufficient knowledge of State testing requirements and be familiar with all related applications and compliance procedures related to middle level testing;

  • Provide input for IEP's and ETR's; responsible for Section 504 caseload;

  • Familiarity with DASL and Progress Book;

Qualifications:

  • Must have appropriate, valid certification or license to teach the assigned content area as recognized by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.

  • Thorough knowledge, understanding, and appreciation for the learning process and the nature and growth of children.

  • Ability to communicate with students and parents in the appropriate manner.

  • Demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and productively with other staff members, students, and administration.

  • Successfully complete a criminal background check and drug screen

American School Counseling Association Standards:

Direct student services including:

  • Instruction - teaching the school counseling and/or SEL curriculum to students focused through the lens of selected student standards from the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success.

  • Appraisal and Advisement - assessing student abilities, interests and achievement to help them make decisions about their future.

  • Counseling - providing professional assistance and support provided to a student or small group of students during times of transition, heightened stress, critical change, or other situations impeding student success. School counselors do not provide therapy or long-term counseling in schools; however, school counselors are prepared to recognize and respond to student mental health needs and to assist students and families seeking resources.

Indirect student services including:

  • Consultation - share strategies supporting student achievement with parents, teachers, other educators and community organizations

  • Collaboration - work with other educators, parents and the community to support student achievement

  • Referrals - support for students and families to school or community resources for additional assistance and information
