Duties

Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Visually inspects Boiler settings and refractory linings for signs of deterioration and failure due to heat stress resulting in flue gases escaping into the plant and endangering on-duty personnel.

  • Observes and documents information such as pressures, temperatures, levels, and detectors to detect for signs of trouble.

  • Monitors, adjusts and control all phases of Boiler Plant operations through the use of manual, automatic, semi-automatic, microprocessor controls or systems.

  • Adjusts fuel feeds, volume and velocity of draft and other firebox variables to maintain combustion efficiencies, prevents unexpected shutdowns and prevents possible furnace explosions.

  • Uses electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic controls, charts, reorders, meters, gauges, and computer-generated data to determine adjustments or corrections necessary for proper Boiler Operations or changing load requirements.

  • Operates, adjusts, maintains, replaces and repairs auxiliary equipment.

  • Performs major and minor repairs to equipment and operates in accordance with regulations and directives, ASME Boiler and pressure vessel codes, ASHRAE Standards, and facility policies.

  • Collects samples of boiler water and following prescribed methods must be able to run test to determine boiler water quality.

  • Arranges, locates, plans, and lays out the installation, modification, fabrication and repair of various new and existing piping systems and related equipment.

  • Assists with project design and planning with projects affecting the boiler plant.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 7 days a week 8:00am-4:00pm, 4:00pm-12:00am, 12:00am-8:00am

Qualifications

License Requirement: Selected applicants must be able to obtain a South Dakota Rural Water License for Basic water treatment.

Physical Requirements: Frequently work in confined areas in and around boilers. Requires moderate to

strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Frequently lift and carry boiler parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted. Occasionally, and with assistance, carries items weighing over 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Mainly works indoors, but occasionally work outside for short periods of time. Subject to high temperatures, constant noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil

and fumes. Subject to cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from acids, caustics, hot water, steam and contact with boilers. Work on catwalks and ladders.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
