For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. JOB SUMMARY

Assists in the performance of duties necessary to operate and maintain boilers and other auxiliary equipment for producing steam for heat and power for the Hospital.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

High school or trade school graduate in a mechanical discipline with additional training specific to stationary operating engineering.

Experience:

A minimum of five (5) years in boiler/steam plant operation.

License and Certification:

Current OE-2 license (S-1 or S-2 Class licenses are also acceptable) and valid Connecticut drivers license required.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

Education:

Completion of an operating stationary engineer training program of not less than three years as approved by the CT Department of Consumer Protection.

Experience:

Five (5) to seven (7) years as an Operating Stationary Engineer performing work in a physical power plant associated with industrial or healthcare facilities.

License and Certification:

S-1 or S-2 license with ability to obtain an OE-2 license within 6 months.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use).

PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING

Job Summary Provides direct and related respiratory care procedures for patients as prescribed by physicians orders, federal and state statutes, TJC, and Hospital and Department policies. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Graduate of an Advanced Level Respiratory Therapist Educational Program or two (2) year Respiratory college. Experience: Newly graduated with no previous experience but with 1,000 clinical hours in a hospital setting. License and Certification: CRT certification by N.B.R.C. required for this position to meet State Statute for Respiratory Care Practitioners. RRT registered by N.B.R.C. within 2 years from date of hire. Current CT state licensure. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS Education: Graduate of an Advanced Level Respiratory Therapist Educational Program. Experience: At least one (1) year of experience as a RRT in a hospital setting. License and Certification: RRT registered by N.B.R.C. Current CT state licensure required. Current ACLS Certification. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use). Demonstrated knowledge to perform pulmonary function testing. Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with departments, employees, physicians and managers. Ability to read and understand oral and written material and effectively communicate technical or complex information. Demonstrates critical thinking and advanced decision making skills. Must be organized, flexible and a team player. Good time management skills. Ability to work in a stressful environment. Ability to handle multiple priorities. PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING Work is performed in accordance with instructions and procedures, but incumbents must organize the work and set priorities. Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times. Requires the ability to recognize problem situations and refer them to the appropriate staff member.
