Responsibilities
Under direct supervision, operate boilers and auxiliary equipment according to specified procedures and safety standards.
Demonstrate personal commitment to the organizations core values through active involvement in the quality improvement process.
Demonstrate safe work practices and attitudes, follow safety rules, work to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participate in organizational and departmental safety programs.
Operate boilers according to specific procedures. Activities include, a) maintaining proper pressure, b) controlling amount of fuel, c) adding water treatment chemicals, d) regulating water level. E) checking the amount of draft, f) checking for the correct operation of all gages, and g) operating blowers as required.
Manipulate valves to control the flow of water and fuel and to increase or decrease steam as required.
Adjust equipment controls to correct malfunctions if they occur.
Observe operating equipment, meters, and gages to insure that operation is in accord with specified instructions. Inspect boiler safety devices.
Regularly record meter, gage, and graph readings in department equipment log. Periodically tally amount of natural gas, domestic gas, steam pressure, water volume, and oxygen expended or required.
Report abnormal operating conditions or major repair requirements to shift engineer, and assist in implementing remedial action.
Perform minor repairs, as necessary, such as replacing defective meters, packing valves, worn gaskets, tightening joints and lights.
Receive calls from departmental personnel regarding problems, such as lack of temperature control.
Relay information to shift engineer of maintenance mechanics who make the necessary repairs or corrections.
Maintain and operate air conditioning equipment. Check and record temperatures on air conditioning equipment, such as chillers, chilled water pumps, and condensed water pumps.
Monitor motor and pump bearings on all powerhouse equipment monthly.
Maintain the boiler room and work area in a clean, orderly, and safe condition. May clean and pain equipment as necessary.
Responsible for operating Siemens Energy Management and Simplex Fire Alarm computers and the knowledge of buildings fire protection system.
Assist in the annual boiler inspection and prepare boilers for annual inspection.
Maintain and control the occurrence of biological contamination in the cooling towers and maintain proper water treatment in the cooling towers.
Responsible for planned maintenance in the powerhouse on equipment. (Fans, pumps, motors, etc.).
Daily, test and treat boiler feed water for scale, oxygen, pitting, corrosion, hardness, etc. and add chemicals to treat these problems.
Perform snow removal duties and spread salt on hospital driveways, entrances and walkways as assigned.
Assist with minor repairs to machines, equipment, and systems normally attended to by the Maintenance unit of the department. May repair such things, but not limited to, pneumatic tube systems, air compressors, change light bulbs, respond to T.V. problems, room temperature requests, calls regarding plugged sinks and commodes or duties and projects as assigned.

Demonstrate ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail while performing tasks.
Demonstrate ability to read, write and understand written and verbal communications. Demonstrate ability to perform basic math functions including addition, subtraction and multiplication.
Demonstrate ability to walk and stand approximately 90% of work time, often lifting and positioning equipment and devices up to 60 lbs.
Ability to demonstrate friendly, courteous, professional customer service behaviors and provide service recovery in an accommodating manner consistently.
Requirements
Licensure / Certification / Registration:
One or more of the following required:
Third Class Stationary Engineer license (City of Detroit).
High Pressure Boiler Operator license (City of Detroit).
