Job Description

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Boat Officer 2 located in Kodiak!

What you will be doing:

This position serves as an able-body seaman aboard the R/V Resolution. Primary duties include operating trawl and other fishing gear, standing wheel watch, performing complex repairs to trawl nets, assisting with vessel maintenance and repair, and planning and preparing meals for crew and passengers.

The Division of Commercial Fisheries strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and well-being are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully.

The benefits of joining our team:

The RV Resolution is a well-maintained research vessel with a dedicated crew that operates in remote and interesting locations in Alaska. Most at-sea work occurs during spring and summer months while fall/winter months offer flexibility. Joining the Resolution crew offers an opportunity to directly support culturally and economically important herring, salmon, and Tanner crab fisheries in Southwest Alaska.

The working environment you can expect:

The Resolution's home port is in Kodiak, Alaska. From April through September, the Resolution makes six or more trawl survey or fishery management support trips ranging between one and five weeks in length. Research cruises primarily occur in the Gulf of Alaska along the Alaska Peninsula from Kodiak to Dutch Harbor. Vessel maintenance, net mending, and training opportunities occupy fall and winter months.

Who we are looking for:

  • Must be capable of working both independently and cooperatively as part of a vessel/science crew of up to seven and have the physical capacity for remote and arduous work for long periods of time at sea.

  • Deploy and operate bottom trawl, pot, and other fishing or sampling gear. Operate or direct the operation of auxiliary equipment such as anchor, cranes, and trawl winches. Independently repair and mend trawl gear. Trawl repairs must be accomplished by following net manufacture specifications and requires the ability to read net plans.

  • Maintain the vessel in operating condition by performing or assisting general maintenance and scheduled repairs, replenishing supplies and fuel, loading cargo, and rigging sampling equipment.

  • Responsible for planning and preparation of meals on board and purchasing food for each trip. Maintain galley and living areas in a neat, clean, and safe condition.

  • Assist biological staff by sorting catch, identifying species, and weighing and measuring catch.
