The Community Development Division is a catalyst for joining community partners with resources to increase access to housing, to create a sustainable community, and to promote neighborhood revitalization. There are over 18,645 individuals experiencing poverty in Yellowstone County and approximately 2,500 local citizens experience homelessness in Billings during the year.
Over 700 individuals are homeless in Billings on any given day, including at least 120 families with children. In order to maintain momentum for homeless initiatives sponsored by the City of Billings - Community Development Division, staff created an AmeriCorps Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) program known as the Billings Metro VISTA Project (B-MVP) in 2009; sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The B-MVP brings valuable resources to organizations fighting homelessness and poverty to the community to strengthen service capacity and organizational viability for long-term poverty impact.
The B-MVP significantly impacts area poverty, strengthens service capacity, and contributes to organizational viability for service providers. Target populations include those experiencing poverty, with special emphasis on Veterans, American Indians, children and the disabled. Broad-based efforts include both intervention and prevention modalities to increase client access to assets, housing and services.
To date, over 200 VISTA members have engaged in service to build capacity for nearly 50 organizations in local communities in economic opportunity, healthy futures, education, and veterans / military focus areas. The project will impact poverty through the facilitation of projects designed to enhance economic opportunity, healthy futures, education, and Veteran / military member services. Candidates must have completed a previous national service term.
