Job Description

The Addiction Science Team at UMSL-Missouri Institute of Mental Health (UMSL-MIMH) conducts grant implementation and evaluation services for several federally- and state-funded research and service grants focused on substance use prevention, treatment, recovery, and harm reduction efforts across Missouri. Our overarching goals include preventing overdose deaths, promoting the dignity and worth of people who use drugs, and reducing barriers to evidence-based treatment and recovery services. We accomplish this through training, advocacy, building and supporting community-based programs and partnerships, evaluation, quantitative and community-based research, and outreach. Given the diversity of the communities we serve, it is essential we approach our work with a focus on equity and an attitude of cultural humility.

We are currently looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable, inquiring, and compassionate individual to help us provide capacity building support to Black harm reduction organizations and initiatives in St. Louis, working to expand harm reduction approaches through training, community events, and research dissemination.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Helping build pipelines for Black Harm Reduction Coalition (BHRC) community partners to State Opioid Response harm reduction resources including naloxone, fentanyl test strips, consultant training, and educational materials.

  • Liaison to relevant drug-related data including overdose, People Who Use Drugs, peer, treatment and recovery research:

  • Adapts data for BHRC partners to use for advocacy, outreach, education, and grant writing

  • Uses BHRC network to inform UMSL-MIMH research outputs to increase community accessibility and responsiveness

  • Continuing support of inter-agency community projects that emerged from The CENTER Initiative, included but not limited to Black Women's Healing Circles, Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution, Access in STL Public Housing, development of Black-specific harm reduction educational materials, and CENTER Black Voices research project

  • Connecting BHRC to UMSL-MIMH legislative advocacy opportunities and advocacy capacity building support

  • Amplifying BHRC strategies, priorities, and learnings at relevant community meetings, task forces, conferences, and other settings

  • Supporting with project evaluation and data collection across core coalition activities and partner collaborative projects

  • Participating in BHRC staff and partner meetings, as needed. Supports long-term strategy and partnership development of BHRC

8am-5pm

Remote Work/Physical Requirements: This will be a hybrid work position with days that consist of in-office, community, and remote work.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in public health, social work, psychology, epidemiology, or a related field is preferred

  • Possess at least a moderate understanding of substance use disorder - particularly opioid use disorder - and the role of evidence-based harm reduction strategies in combating the overdose crisis

  • Recognizes ways that race and other identities intersect in the work, especially with communities we serve and is comfortable talking about identities such as race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, class, ability, or gender in plain, specific terms

  • Able to maintain strong, collaborative relationships with a diverse group of consultants and grassroots organizations and know how to build alliances and points of collaboration across systems

  • Able to think steps ahead, anticipate hurdles, and come up with pragmatic solutions

  • Possess a high level of organization and self-direction and is able to manage high volumes of work with efficacy and attention to detail

  • Able to navigate Zoom Video Conference systems and Microsoft Outlook Calendar

  • Be skilled in Microsoft Office and Web-based interface to independently manage data tracking through Excel spreadsheets, compose PowerPoint presentations, and develop info-graphics and one pagers for public presentations

  • Comfortable with public speaking and presentation.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Pay commensurate with education and experience.

Hiring Range: $52,000 - $57,000 Annual

Grade: GGS-09
