Receiving general direction from the Medical Director of the Neurological Clinical Research Institute (NCRI), the Biorepository Manager is responsible for overall program oversight and operations of the NCRI biorepository, which serves the Northeast ALS Consortium (NEALS). This position plays a key role, in coordinating, managing, and tracking biospecimen collection. The Biorepository Manager should be involved in developing and implementing relevant regulatory, quality, and operational policies and procedures related to biospecimen management including supervision of staff activities and inventory management. Drawing on a broad understanding of Hospital practices and policies and displaying a high degree of initiative and independent judgment, the Biorepository Manager will continually assess and direct a wide range of programmatic issues.


  • Responsible for executing, on a daily basis, the procedural, managerial and policy decisions for the NCRI Biorepository

  • Participates in all decisions made regarding laboratory procedures and identifies modifications of existing policies and procedures.

  • Coordinates all project activities related to the laboratory and undertakes quality assurance programs.

  • Participates in biospecimen or clinical-trial committees such as the Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

  • Responsible for regular and ad hoc reporting on sample inventory and activities of the Biorepository

  • Participates in and supports the processes related to hiring and performance of biorepository staff

  • Responsible for Biorepository program development, fiscal management & budgeting (with Grants administrator)

  • Participates in cost containment measures to manage the lab efficiently.

  • Participates in strategic planning, partnership/collaboration development, and data collection and reporting

  • Maintains up-to-date best practices and participates in local and international professional organizations, as suitable

  • Maintains knowledge of regulatory environment governing biorepository acquisition and distribution

  • Manages laboratory space, equipment ordering and maintenance requirements

  • Coordinates resources with staff and other departments to facilitate internal and external research collaborations

  • Provides customer service and monitors customer satisfaction with both MGH and non-MGH PI's that utilize the biorepository.

  • Complies with all required and requested reporting of progress, activities, and impact metrics

  • Role models behavior to promote team-work and professional staff interactions


Indirect: Responsible for training and supervising CRC's on biorepository best practices.


Work is performed in an office/lab environment with minimal off-site travel.

Required: Minimum of 3 years management experience in healthcare or laboratory environment with previous experience in a biorepository or similar tissue lab.

VIEW JOBS 8/10/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-11-08T00:00 This position requires preparation of fresh human tissue and blood specimens for frozen storage for subsequent research and diagnostic use as well as maintenance of the computerized database for the frozen tissue archive.# This position also handles research coordinator type functions. # Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Manager and Medical Director of the Biorepository and/or surgical pathologists and hematologist/oncologists, the Biorepository Technician may perform the following tasks and assume the responsibility for duties including the following: - Processing fresh human tumor and normal tissue from surgical pathology specimens for cryopreservation under in-direct supervision of a surgical pathologist. - Separate buffy coat cells from whole blood samples by density-gradient centrifugation and preparation of plasma/serum samples for cryopreservation. - Transfer samples to liquid nitrogen freezers for long-term storage - Retrieve samples from liquid nitrogen freezers and prepare them for distribution - Maintain liquid nitrogen freezers including documentation of temperature and service records - Catalogue all samples stored in liquid nitrogen freezers using a dedicated computerized database - Abstract diagnostic data for frozen samples and enter the information into the computerized database - Work directly with patients to obtain informed consent for research participation - Coordinate with other research staff to ensure that studies are properly adhered to and that tissue collection coordinates with protocols for compliance. - Maintain IRB documentation for the various studies - Assist the Biorepository Manager in other operational and administrative tasks # Requirements: Bachelor degree in biological science preferred. At least one year working in a biomedical research or clinical research laboratory or equivalent coursework or internship.# Previous experience working with CoPath a plus. Knowledge of and experience with complex laboratory practices including cell separation and nucleic acid extraction preferred. Knowledge of and adherence to infection control procedures Good organizational skills to maintain careful records of specimen information Good computer skills required for data entry and database development and management.
