Demonstrates a basic understanding of engineering disciplines including electronics pneumatics mechanical systems basic TCP/IP networking desktop computing and human physiology. Responsible for installing performing preventive and corrective maintenance performing quality assurance and accident investigation for medical technology Responsible for maintenance and calibration of medical equipment while maintaining compliance with safely rules codes practices and policies.

  • Analyzes medical device performance through the completion of preventive maintenance (PM).

  • Performs calibration of sophisticated medical devices using various test equipment and through the design of patient simulators

  • Completes repairs on minor to complex medical equipment.

  • Maintains UVA medical equipment inventory system.

  • Complies with all safety rules codes practices and policies.

  • Performs initial inspections on medical equipment.

  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Position Compensation Range: $16.35 - $26.15 Hourly

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High School or Post High School Tech Training.

Experience: 0-3 years relevant experience.

Licensure: Valid Virginia Driver's license required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require walking some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

This position will assign veterinary technical staff and participate in the triage of animal illness reports, perform physical exams, evaluate health status of ill animals, administer treatments, perform anesthesia in a variety of animal species, monitor patient intraoperatively and post-operative. The incumbent will maintain patient treatment and surgical records and maintain surgical support facilities, as well as review and critique these documents generated by subordinate veterinary technicians, directed by the Center's veterinarians. The incumbent will supervise work assignments of veterinary technician staff, and train other veterinary technicians in biomethodology, regulations, policies, procedures and documentation. Responsibilities: * Supervise all veterinary technicians, conduct evaluations/performance reviews and provide feedback. * Create the veterinary technician weekly schedule for daily vivarium animal health checks, weekend/holiday coverage and the on-call back up of weekend/holiday coverage. * Prepare, review and update, and administer the new veterinary technician training program by direct participation or assignment of subordinate veterinary technicians. * Prepare training materials and teach some or all the training sessions to animal care and research staff in animal health assessment, regulations, anesthesia and surgery, perioperative care of research animals and biomethodology. * Train veterinary technicians in: SOPs, IACUC policies, animal care, general safety, biohazardous agents and chemical hazards and all routine veterinary technician activities. * Weekly create assignments of veterinary technical staff for large and small animal research support (anesthesia, surgery, parenteral injections, etc.) including providing back-up veterinary technical assignments for these activities by assigning subordinates and/or directly participating. * Train other veterinary technicians or assign subordinate veterinary technicians to train, research technical staff and animal care staff in various biomethodologies. * Actively participates in teaching Center for Comparative Medicine training classes for other employees. * Work independently to maintain stocking of consumable supplies and pharmaceuticals and report items in short supply that need to be ordered to the center management. * Triage animal illness that are reported by animal care staff during the workday from the various vivaria. * Perform physical examination to evaluate health problems of ill animals reported by animal care or research staff and follow-up at reasonable intervals on those animals receiving ongoing treatment, administer treatments prescribed by a veterinarian, relate findings of physical examination and responses to treatment to a veterinarian for feedback on cases that are not routine or associated with breed or strain characteristics. Work with the veterinarians to administer health programs for all species such as programs of routine vaccination, deworming, specimen collection and health surveillance. * Create and maintain applicable records of animal examination, provisional diagnosis, laboratory testing, treatment and response to treatment for ill animals. * Participate in weekend and holiday veterinary technician rotational coverage as well as on call rotational coverage. * Ensure that there is backup for all veterinary technician assignments by equitable distribution of assignments to subordinate veterinary technicians as well as actively participating in backup coverage including the duties of on-call status, weekend/holiday coverage, diagnostic lab procedures, large animal anesthesia/surgical assistance, and all other veterinary technical duties as assigned. * Provide training directly or by assignment of veterinary technical staff to research staff when requested in bio- methodology such as species-specific anesthesia, blood collection, administration of medications and physical examination. * Maintain all controlled substance records for receiving, dispensing, storing, inventory, usage and disposal in a compliance with Drug Enforcement Agency and Virginia Board of Pharmacy regulations. * When requested by the CCM Director dispense controlled substances and other drugs to the research staff that area ordered through CCM online drug ordering system, and maintain record keeping as required. * Assign veterinary technicians or personally perform anesthesia equipment validation for inhalation anesthetic vaporizers within and outside the Center. Maintain inhalation anesthesia machines by validating the efficacy of anesthetic gas scavenging, changing baralyme at appropriate intervals, changing anesthetic hoses as they deteriorate, perform maintenance on respiratory ventilators. When required by the veterinarians, obtain annual licensure for radio-graphic equipment, adhere to the use of dosimetry badges as required by Radiation Safety and Commonwealth regulations. * Assist the Veterinarians, principal investigator and/or research technical staff with techniques of large and small animal restraint and handling, preparation of surgical candidates by performing anesthesia, aseptic preparation of surgical site, intubation, venous and/or urinary catheterization and anesthesia monitoring. * Perform technical functions on a variety of species such as venipuncture, euthanasia, specimen collection, physical examination, tattooing. * Administer anesthesia and maintain anesthetic records, monitor and record post-operative patient recovery administering analgesics, antibiotics or other medications as prescribed by veterinarian or allowed in ACUC approved animal research protocols. Make appropriate entries into laboratory animal records, maintains entries in individual animal records for USDA regulated species retained for greater than 14 days in the research facility. * Maintain surgical support facilities in a sanitary state validated monthly by Charm® swab testing by assigning veterinary technicians to perform this function and when necessary participate in this task. Maintain surgery areas and pharmacy well- stocked, all medications within expiration date and all this in an orderly manner. Schedule and ensure that the Center's anesthesia and monitoring equipment preventative maintenance is performed annually. * In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. Requirements: Education: Bachelor's degree Experience: 5-7 years. Minimum of 1-2 years experience as supervisor or in a managerial role. Experience working as a veterinary technician in a biomedical research facility. Experience with a variety of species including swine, sheep, rodents, rabbits and birds. Licensure: Must have a current license as a veterinary technician in at least one state. Physical Demands: Walking between vivarium in different buildings and standing while examining or administering treatments is common. Work in an animal facility where the person may be exposed to allergens or microorganisms associated with soiled animal caging sometimes at Biosafety Level 2 (low risk) that requires decontamination. Must participate in the UVa occupational health program. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: * Must be comfortable with handling and restraining laboratory animals and working in an animal research facility with a variety of species. * Must have the ability to perform animal physical examinations, clinical specimen collection, administer medications, perform laboratory diagnostic procedures and performing euthanasia. * Must have ability to create and maintain accurate medical records. * Must have ability to work independently as well as part of a team. * Must have clear communication skills. * Must have ability to lift and move a 30lb anesthetized animal and assist in lifting and moving larger animals. * Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time. * Must have experience working with a variety of laboratory animals including but not limited to swine, sheep, rabbits, rodents, passerine birds and chickens, ferrets, and tree shrews. * Must have a minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a supervisor or in a managerial role. Preferred Qualifications: Experience: Previous work as a veterinary technician in a biomedical research facility. Experience with PC based software, web-browser and Microsoft Office software including Microsoft Access. Licensure: Laboratory Animal Technologist preferred.
