Overview

As an Airman Accommodation Laboratory (AAL) Engineer, you will be a part of project teams assigned to develop, test, build, deploy, and evaluate new and improved solutions to meet the needs of the customer. The AAL measures and represents United States Air force (USAF) airmen body size data as it relates to fit, function, and safety to improve protection and long-term health for the warfighter. The Candidate will work with study coordinators, engineers, scientists, and other members of the team on research relating to engineering anthropometry, crew station modeling, head/neck modeling, integration and validation of human and system models, developing and supporting digital engineering practices, and statistical modeling of 3D human body shape and skeletal geometry. AAL engineers translate research results into customer solutions and are responsible for keeping the program manager, chief scientist, teammates, and other stakeholders updated throughout each project. AAL engineers should have knowledge, interests, and experience in anatomy, human computational modeling, biomechanics, and ergonomics.

Job Duties

  • Perform equipment systems and aircraft crew stations evaluations as it relates to fit and function, given anthropometric population variations and human body factors.

  • Data Collection: respectful, careful, and methodical measurement of anthropometry and performance variables of human subjects and high value systems.

  • Data Analysis: numerical and statistical analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data as they relate to human fit and performance mapping of personal equipment, aircraft crew stations and other related areas as tasked.

  • Planning/Reporting: well written, accurate and concise project test plans/reports.

  • Utilize 3D scanning (FARO, Artec, Vitus) and motion capture (Xsens) equipment to gather information on test participants and crew station environments.

  • Create visual presentations using charts, graphs, and tables in SAS, Excel, Statistica, Polyworks, and 3D software programs as well as digital human modeling.

  • Provide test and evaluation (T&E) support on emmerging helmet systems, protection and survival gear, seating and restraint systems, and aircraft crew stations.
