Assures proper functionality, safety and reliability of equipment for use by patients and staff. Inspects and services equipment as needed per guidelines. Expertise includes competence in the use of electronic test equipment, including oscilloscope, digital multimeter, signal generator, and other measuring and electronic diagnostic devices. Completes and documents the monthly scheduled inspections assigned by the Chief of Biomedical Engineering.

Four years current experience in the Biomedical Equipment or related field preferred. .


Associates Degree in Biomedical Instrumentation or Associates Degree in Electronic Engineering, or military training and certification.


AAMI CBET Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician preferred

Special Skills

Knowledge of Anatomy/Physiology, medical terminology, gas plumbing, mechanical systems, pneumatic systems, and hydraulics a plus.

Job Summary Under direction and supervision, incumbent performs a variety of routine and complex tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of clinical equipment including life support equipment. Incumbent performs scheduled maintenance on clinical equipment using specialized test equipment, assists in the support of a systematic preventive maintenance program of biomedical instrumentation, and documents the introduction of new therapeutic and diagnostic equipment, corrective and preventive maintenance actions and special requests as required. Biomedical Equipment Technicians at this level serve as a resource to UCSF Healthcare and Academic Research System employees in the proper operation and maintenance of clinical and/or laboratory equipment. They notify user departments regarding status of repairs, assist departments in obtaining loaner or replacement equipment and works with departments to ensure that all incoming clinical equipment is inspected per department policy. Report all patient safety issues to supervisor or manager and assist with correction of issue as required. Assist in identifying and recommending replacement of equipment that is obsolete, has extensive repair history, or has identified safety issues. Conducts evaluations of equipment as required and participates in Device Incident Investigation process and provide follow up to management. Required Qualifications * Three years related experience to acquire competency in applying biomedical and electronics principles in a medical center environment; or an equivalent combination of work experience and education * High School diploma or equivalent experience * Background in electronics * Maintenance skills in electronics, mechanical or electromechanical device repair * Knowledge in electronic circuitry * Knowledge in electronics troubleshooting * Working knowledge of physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology * Working knowledge of e-mail, database management, spreadsheet, and word processor applications * Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams and illustrated parts drawing of biomedical instrumentation * Ability to read color codes on wiring and electronic components * Ability to comprehend and follow both written and oral communications * Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, clinical and medical staff, and the general public * Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays if necessary * Ability to function in a sterile environment if necessary * Ability to keep accurate records * The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations Preferred Qualifications * Associate's Degree in Electronics or Biomedical Equipment Technology Licensure/Certification N/A Living Pride Standards Service Excellence * Demonstrates service excellence by following the Everyday PRIDE Guide with the UCSF Medical Center standards and expectations for communication and behavior.
