Overview

Serve as a credentialed Principal Investigator (PI) and act as a Team lead in the Injury Biomechanics and Protection Group and provide expertise in a relevant field of injury biomechanics and research to meet the Injury Biomechanics mission and the objectives of the Blunt, Blast, and Accelerative Injury and Protection portfolio. This includes, but is not limited to, the mission of protecting the Soldier and other Service Members from physical stressors, such as blunt impact, blast exposures, and accelerative loadings, and optimizing personal protective and enabling equipment to maximize Soldier Lethality.

Conduct RDT&E, analysis, and investigations (field, laboratory, analytic, and computational) as a part of integrated government/contractor team and in collaboration with intramural and extramural Government personnel, industry, and academic partners. Provide scientific support for conduct of specialized research described in grants, proposals, and other regulatory agreements.

Responsibilities

  • Complete all documentation and reporting requirements for research activities, to include all materials and record-keeping required for regulatory and safety compliance. Communicate and coordinate project, personnel, and resource schedules to ensure project and programmatic goals are achieved in a timely manner against project and programmatic timelines.

    Draft and develop proposals test plans, and protocol documentation from literature reviews and data synthesis according t policy and procedures of the USAARL. Execute biomechanical research and testing and injury or performance biomechanics research with engineering focus on at least three projects per year. Such biomechanics performance research may require work with human volunteers, including volunteer recruitment, coordination, and study execution.

    All aspects of RDT&E are included, but particularly Human Subject Research, Research Not Involving Human Subjects (RNIHS), and cadaveric research. Draft and prepare reports, presentations, and other documentation on research progress and findings, which will be distributed, presented, and/or discussed within the laboratory and/or at scientific forums outside the laboratory. Collaborate closely with industry and customers on biomechanical/biomedical projects, products, and knowledge solutions.

    Conduct injury biomechanics research with equipment and in field settings that may create potentially hazardous conditions. Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering related field such as electrical, biomedical, mechanical, biomechanics, physics, etc. Must have a minimum 6 years of experience in biomedical engineering or clinical.

    Experience in laboratory procedures, testing and research activities. Experience managing a small team of technicians. Must have mathematics and data analysis and acquisition experience, including scientific software packages and principles of data acquisition. Demonstrated experience with human volunteer performance and kinematic motion tools, techniques, and methodology for data capture and analysis.

SPECIAL SKILLS

  • Able to work independently with minimal to no direction to solve analytic and technical problems, particularly those that require human research volunteer, PMHS, human kinematic and performance data and analysis, spinal and musculoskeletal research and testing, and application of advance engineering principles to kinesiology-related projects. Be able to use and integrate complex medical and engineering methodologies and equipment, including but not limited to motion capture systems, medical and physiological stimulation and measurement systems (e.g., EMG, nerve conduction, dynamometer), and engineering instrumentation (e.g., accelerometers, load cells, force plates), software (e.g., MATLAB, SAS), and data acquisition.

    Must be able to read, understand and execute techniques and procedures within the quality standards and timelines prescribed by the research plan. Ability to coordinate multiple projects and initiatives at one time. Good written communication skills and a solid understanding of Government contracting and the professional services industry.

    Good computer skills with advanced knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office Suite software. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.

    Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; monitors own work to ensure quality. Proven ability to exercise mature judgment specifically in recognizing and respecting the confidential nature of corporate and personnel matters.

Supervisory

Provide programmatic and technical guidance to Group and project team and management.

Physical Demands

Frequent sitting, standing, walking, lying down or to be or remain in a position or state of inactivity. Lift and carry 50 lbs. individually and as a part of a team lift and carry operation; use hand tools to assemble and disassemble equipment, instrumentation, and test devices; climb and descend equipment, test devices, military vehicles, steps, or ladders. Work Schedule
40 hours per week. May work variable work hours to meet performance requirements (e.g., proposal and reporting deadlines, collaborations, and lab and field data collections), including occasional night and weekend hours.

Responsibilities * Provide services related to the Injury Biomechanics RDT&E efforts, including the development of draft analysis plans and protocol documentation from literature and data reviews along with the collection and preparation of data for analysis and synthesis according to policy and procedures of the USAARL. All aspects of RDT&E are included, such as Human Subject Research, Research Not Involving Human Subjects (RNIHS), cadaveric studies, and Test and Evaluations. * Provide biomechanical engineering services during preparation for injury biomechanics research studies, including collaborative work with industrial, military, and academic customers and partners, design work for fabrication of biomechanical test equipment/devices, troubleshooting instrumentation and other equipment necessary for research purposes, and selection and justification of materials/supplies/equipment necessary for successful injury biomechanics research. * Provide reliable, timely, and quality biomechanical engineering services (as described above) in a team environment to meet customer, project, and/or program timelines through the testing and/or research life cycle. * In collaboration with study PI and under the direction of Team Chief, and Group Leadership, manage and develop methodology, projects, personnel, and resources. Develops testing procedures and data collection necessary to execute project goals. * Actively conduct (theoretically and hands-on) PMHS research, volunteer research, quality assurance, data analysis, BSL-2 good laboratory practice, and publication of project findings. * Execute biomechanical and/or biomedical protocols and analyze data. * Acquire, analyze, and evaluate data gathered during research and assuring accurate and complete documentation of protocol execution within timelines of research plans. * Preparing for submission protocol interim and final reports, presentations, papers, and other documentation on research progress and findings. * Follow instructions and guidelines and recommend updates as appropriate, to perform the functions of the job, including but not limited to relevant standard operating procedures, national standards of research technical accuracy, and/or other written guidelines provided. * Record all laboratory procedures, research project data, data analyses, conclusions, and results in government-authorized notebooks and electronic systems in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures. * Support with developing, or providing recommendations to improve, laboratory safety and biosafety requirements, in coordination with Group Leadership, Investigators, or other relevant staff. * Assist with writing research work plans, proposals, data collection procedures, and agreements. * Work with industry and customers on biomechanical/biomedical products and solutions. * Perform other data-related and research equipment/facilities support functions, including physical packing, moving, shipping, inventory, relocation, and re-organization, as needed. * Other duties may be assigned.
