TITLE: SCIENCE TEACHER

QUALIFICATIONS: MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF BACHELOR'S DEGREE IN EDUCATION. HOLD A VALID TEACHING CERTIFICATE IN THEIR TEACHING AREA. OR SUCH ALTERNATIVES TO THE ABOVE QUALIFICATIONS AS THE BOARD MAY FIND APPROPRIATE AND ACCEPTABLE.

REPORTS TO: BUILDING PRINCIPAL OR DESIGNEE

SUPERVISES: STUDENTS ENTRUSTED TO THEIR CARE

JOB GOAL: TO DEVELOP IN EACH PUPIL AN AWARENESS OF THE ROLE OF THE SCIENCE IN ECONOMIC AND SCIENCE IN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL PROGRESS; TO MOTIVATE EACH PUPIL TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF SCIENTIFIC FACTS AND PRINCIPLES, AND SKILLS IN SCIENTIFIC METHODS OF PROBLEM SOLVING; TO DISCOVER AND DEVELOP SPECIAL TALENTS OF PUPILS IN SCIENTIFIC SKILLS.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.

2.Plans a program of study that , as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and

abilities of the students.

3.Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity

and interests of the students.

4.Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of

immediate superior.

5.Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.

6.Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and - in harmony with

the goals - establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.

7.Employs a variety to instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the

physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals

or student groups involved.

8.Strives to implement by instruction and action the district's philosophy of education and

instructional goals and objectives.

9.Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports

as required.



  1. Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of

district specialists as required.



  1. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials

and facilities.



  1. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and

administrative regulation.



  1. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and

conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure

and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.



  1. Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes

outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.



  1. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and,

cooperatively with department heads, evaluates their job performance.



  1. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.

  2. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES.

1.Teaches skills, knowledge, and scientific attitudes through courses in general science, earth

sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, physiology, or science problems to secondary pupils,

utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning

activities.

2.Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative

regulations and procedures of the school district.

3.Plans a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and student

experiments; organizes laboratory activities for optimal learning.

4.Demonstrates scientific concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments, and standard or

teacher prepared charts, sketches, and other instructional aids.

5.Provides individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of

pupils and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects and experiments are

being worked on simultaneously.

6.Instructs pupils in proper use, care, and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment, and

plant and animal life.

7.Provides for safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment, and tools. Makes minor

Adjustments and requests repairs to equipment as required.

8.Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior for productive learning environment

during class sessions, laboratory sessions, and field trips.

9.Evaluates each pupil's growth in knowledge, skills, and scientific attitudes in course being

taught.



  1. Selects and requests books, instructional aids, science equipment, chemicals and supplies,

and maintains inventory records as required.



  1. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the

district and self selected professional growth activities.



  1. Identifies pupils needs, and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils

solve health, attitude, and learning problems.



  1. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.

  2. Assists pupils in selection and development of individual research projects.

  3. Cooperates with school administration in providing science displays and programs for the


school and community, and in sponsoring science activities.



  1. Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.

  2. Supervises pupils out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.

  3. Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.

  4. Participates cooperatively with the principal or his designee to develop the method by which


the teacher will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Number of days in the school calendar. Salary to be established by the Board.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Performance Based Teacher Evaluation.

1.Must have sight, hearing, and communication skills.

2.Must have the ability to use all related science equipment, as well as computer assigned

instruction/record keeping materials.

3.Must have working knowledge of current A/V resources as well as fax, emergency procedures,

steps in chain of command and other related functions.

4.Must have quick and easy movement between narrow rows of seats and within limited-

space laboratory areas. The ability to cover distances easily and participate in the resolution

of confrontational - type situations and other related problems encountered during the course

of the day.
