Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota invites applications for a tenure-track, full-time faculty position in the department of biology at the anticipated rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The department offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in biology, biology education, and wildlife management.

This person will be responsible for teaching courses and laboratories in genetics and microbiology, along with other courses in the candidate's area of expertise. Other responsibilities include academic advising and professional mentoring as well as participating on university committees. Start date is August 15, 2024.

Rank and salary will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. Priority will be given to applications submitted on or before February 29, 2024.

Biology faculty collaborate closely with other departments to provide support courses for students pursuing degrees in education, healthcare, and criminal justice as well as supporting the general education program. Biology faculty are encouraged to host undergraduate research. Through the South Dakota Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN), opportunities are available for junior faculty to start-up a research program with undergraduates.

The successful candidate will:

  • Hold an advanced degree in biology or a closely related field. A terminal degree is preferred, but master's or near-completion ABDs will be considered.

  • Have taught successfully, preferably at the college level.

  • Be enthusiastic about approaching teaching and learning in innovative ways that generate interest in the discipline and strengthen student engagement.

  • Be comfortable with, or willing to learn, the use of digital technologies to enhance student engagement and learning.

  • Be firmly committed to high quality teaching and to active, applied learning in the classroom and laboratory setting.

  • Have strong interest in maintaining DWU's values of learning, leadership, faith, and service.

All candidates are encouraged to provide evidence of successful college-level teaching, including strong professor-student relationships, a commitment to student development, and to creative pedagogical practice.
