The Position

Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing care to individuals with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or social, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, in an institution or out-patient setting in accordance with the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act.

Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.

The position supports Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services (SNAMHS) and will initially be assigned to Rawson Neal Hospital, Las Vegas, Nevada. The mission of the agency is to help adults with mental illness improve their quality of life.

Dynamic work responsibilities include assessing and identifying patient health care needs; making comprehensive clinical observations and evaluations; prepare nursing care plans; administering medications as prescribed by a physician or designee; and monitoring patients for medication side effects and/or allergic reaction. The position will also provide crisis intervention; help develop safety plan recommendations for patients; actively participate in a multidisciplinary team managing a wide variety of patients and diagnoses; and ensure compliance with CMS standards, as well as established laws, regulations and SNAMHS policies. This is a full time position that may include weekend and holiday shifts.

Incumbents will be working an innovative variable schedule with overtime after 40 hours per week. This position requires completion of respirator fit testing and completion of Certification in Conflict Prevention and Response Training. Incumbent must keep license, CPR certification, and Nevada Driver's License current.

SNAMHS provides continual on-going training and education to our staff, including paid release time for attending approved trainings and the availability of on-site CEUs. Some positions may be eligible for an additional 5% Shift Differential pay. To Qualify:

In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse and two years of professional nursing experience, one of which included working in a facility or institution with individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities or intellectual disabilities; OR one year as a Psychiatric Nurse I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Notes A Bachelor's degree in nursing is equivalent to a diploma or Associate's degree in nursing and one year of experience.

Out of state applicants must have a temporary license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing at the time of appointment and must obtain permanent licensure as a Registered Nurse issued by the Nevada State Board of Nursing as a condition of continuing employment. Special Requirements A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items.

A State of Nevada/FBI background check will be required of the selected applicant. Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

CPR certification is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.

Duties include casework services, investigations, tracking and monitoring assigned parolees and probationers, pre-sentence investigations, determination of restitution and supervision fees, and referral services for the assigned unit. Positions in this series obtain and verify information; prepare and process case files and recommend appropriate action; and monitor offender activities. Incumbents are not Peace Officer's Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified and do not perform law enforcement functions such as conducting field inspections of offenders' worksite or residence, conducting surveillance, searches and arrests, or transporting prisoners to court or detention facilities. Parole & Probation Specialist III's prepare pre-sentencing reports and recommendations at the fully trained level in the Court Services Unit, or serve as leadworker to other specialists in the Interstate Compact or Pre-Release Unit. Incumbents prepare Pre-Sentence Investigation Reports for the court prior to the sentencing of an individual convicted of a crime. These multi-page reports include a narrative of the offense(s) and recommendations to the judge; applying the appropriate statutory regulations to the offense(s). This requires interviewing convicted offenders to collect their social history and can occur in a prison, office setting, day reporting center, or at the local jail. The successful candidate will have superior written communication skills including grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling with minimal corrections required; experience interviewing persons to elicit information; strong organizational skills; and the ability to meet multiple deadlines using good prioritization skills.
