Summary

This position is located in the Agricultural Research Service, Southeast Area, Peanut Research Laboratory in Dawson, GA.

Responsibilities

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Collecting, preparing, evaluating, and verifying plant samples and supporting records.
Assisting in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment, common to the research of plant genetics and breeding.
Maintaining records and locating and compiling data and other information from various sources.
Performing routine and recurring techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment (i.e. microscopes, thermocyclers, microcentrifuges, and other molecular laboratory equipment).
Tabulating, statistically analyzing and summarizing data using personal computers and software packages.

At the GS-05:

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.

Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-5 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-4 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience collecting and processing plant samples; assisting in conducting breeding or genetic activities; operating molecular laboratory equipment; and collecting and maintaining records of experimental data.

OR

Education: Successfully completed a 4-year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses such as chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.

At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. Related courses include Plant Genetics and Breeding, Plant Biology, Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Pathology, and Horticulture.

OR

An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above.

At the GS-6:

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.

Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

Qualifying experience for GS-6 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-5 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience helping conduct a research project related to the study of plants which includes collecting and processing plant samples; conducting breeding or genetic activities; operating molecular laboratory equipment; and maintaining records of experimental data.

OR

Education: Successfully completed (1) full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees include Plant Genetics and Breeding, Plant Biology, Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Pathology, Plant Science, and Horticulture.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.
