This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-6.
At the GS-5 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-6. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
The position is in the Research and Development Service at VA Portland Health Care System in Portland, OR. The facility consists of the following animal study areas: receiving, quarantine and animal rooms, diet kitchen, food storage area, treatment area, disposal area, surgical suites (pre-operating rooms, central services, recovery area), disposal area (waste containers), wash area for animal equipment and caging, procedural laboratories for specialized animal research, and two satellite animal facilities on station.
The Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Animal), will be is responsible for the day to day operation and management of assigned rooms and areas within the animal facilities. These rooms are varied and may involve comparative laboratory animal science, technology, husbandry; allied health and nursing care; clinical laboratory support, requisition of laboratory animals, related equipment and supplies. She/he receives animal subjects, equipment, supplies and services delivered to the Animal Facility.
Animal Care and Maintenance:
Feeds, cleans, and cares for all laboratory animals in assigned rooms as described in animal
room protocol and by the supervisor;
Administers drugs and special diets according to protocols for particular experiments or treatments;
Regularly monitors general health of animals;
Orders and receives animals from approved vendors;
Independently administers analgesics as necessary and if there is any concern for the
Facility Operation Management:
Maintains equipment, rooms, and supplies in Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) inspection readiness at all times;
Reports and/or corrects any dangerous or potentially hazardous situations that may exist in the Animal Facility;
Monitors environmental conditions in animal rooms;
Reports diminishing amounts of supplies, drugs, medications, feed, bedding, and materials to assume an adequate supply at all times;
Operates in appropriate (avoiding damage to equipment and to operator) manner all Animal Facility equipment (Autoclaves(s), cage washer, bottle washer and filler, fume hoods, work benches, room foggers, Thoren caging system, Edstrom water system, etc.).

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, principles and other guidelines to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically related to the work of the position.
This specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower graded level in the Federal service. Qualifying experience includes: Experience must have been related to the work of the position for which application is made.
The specialized experience required for some positions in this series is normally work performed in a controlled environment. Qualifying specialized experience include: Research activity or control program work; Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment; Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice.
Note: Farming experience that was not performed in a controlled environment, or experience as a laborer who was not responsible for planning and scheduling his/her own work, but only performed assigned tasks, would not qualify as specialized experience.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: (COPY OF TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position to be filled. The successful completion of a full course of study of at least 12 months in a school for clinical laboratory technicians may be substituted for the 1 year of specialized experience required at the GS-5 level for positions involving microbiology and biochemistry technician work.
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:(COPY OF TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
Possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements education and experience are also qualifying. If education is used to meet specialized experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position.
