Summary

This position is located with the Agricultural Research Service, Crop Improvement and Protection Research Unit in Salinas, CA.

This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 4 years.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with collecting, preparing, evaluating and verifying molecular biological samples and supporting records.

  • Contributes ideas towards the planning and sequencing of the technical aspects of the plant and fungi research.

  • Utilizes specialized equipment (i.e. balances, autoclaves, homogenizers, spectrophotometers, droplet digital real time PCR, conventional and real time PCR, thermal cycler, etc.) to conduct molecular biology research experiments.

  • Assists with maintaining, calibrating and modifying complex/specialized equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.

  • Performs molecular biology analyses, such as DNA isolation, conventional and real time PCR, DNA sequence analysis, genome assemblies, etc.

  • Works with next generation DNA sequence data (Illumina, Pacific Biosciences, Oxford Nanopore) using standard computer programs (command line coding with Unix or Linux based computer programs).

At the GS-8:

Qualifying experience for GS-8 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in molecular biological research related to plant or fungi; collecting scientific data; and operating scientific equipment used to collect biological samples.

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Molecular Biology, Plant Pathology, Mycology, Ecology, or Microbiology.

OR

A combination of graduate education and experience as described above.

At the GS-9:

Qualifying experience for GS-9 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-8 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting molecular biological research related to plants or fungi; collecting and analyzing data; and operating and maintaining scientific equipment used to collect biological samples.

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Molecular Biology, Plant Pathology, Mycology, Ecology, or Microbiology.

Working Environment

The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.
