Summary

This position is located Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Beltsville Agricultural Research Center (BARC), Invasive Insect Biocontrol and Behavior Laboratory (IIBBL), in Beltsville, MD.

The incumbent will assists in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties in a laboratory, common to the assigned area of work related to insects.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory.

  • Maintain insect colonies and rear insects.

  • Maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory.

  • Keeps detailed records of experimental data.

  • Relate significance of research results to the overall research assignment.

  • Maintains, calibrates and modifies equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures.

  • Maintains records and locates and compiles data and other information from various sources.

  • Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages related to insects.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Time in Grade:

Applicants must have one year at the next lower grade to be considered for the next higher grade (e.g. one year at the GS-5 grade level for consideration for the GS-6 grade level).

At The GS-05:

Qualifying experience for GS-05 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-04 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in insect research studies in a laboratory environment; insect rearing and maintaining insect colonies; collecting or preparing insect samples; and operating or maintaining research equipment.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related. Related courses include Entomology, or Zoology.

OR

An appropriate combination of education and experience as described above.

At The GS-06:

Qualifying experience for GS-06 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in insect research studies in a laboratory environment; insect rearing and maintaining insect colonies; collecting or preparing insect samples; operating or maintaining research equipment; and recording research results and data using automated systems.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if related. Related degrees may include Entomology, or Zoology.

OR

An appropriate combination of graduate level education and experience as described above.

Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a work day) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/ eye coordination.

Work Environment: The work involves regular and recurring moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals or working outdoors. The employee is required to use protective clothing such as gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
