Summary

The position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Dairy Forage Research Center, located in Madison, WI.

Responsibilities

The primary purpose of the position is to provide technical support for diverse research trials focused on dairy nutrition, genetics, and reducing emissions; and improving environmental impacts of dairy farms, rumen, and gut microbial populations and phenomena.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Assisting in recognizing abnormal or pathological conditions or behavior in research animals.
Monitoring animal health, behavior and well-being while research samples and data are being collected.
Maintaining schedules of sample collection activities involving livestock.
Providing on-site support for research data collection and recording data in the prescribed format.
Performing routine and recurring laboratory or experimental techniques in support of a study involving livestock by using a variety of specialized laboratory and barn equipment.
Tabulating, statistically analyzing and summarizing data using personal computers and software packages.

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelors degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.

At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related. Related courses include animal nutrition, genetics or physiology, environmental sciences, zoology, dairy or poultry sciences.

A combination of education and experience as described above.
At the GS-06:
Qualifying experience for the GS-06 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-05 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Performs complex laboratory tests in the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. Duties include; processing of specimens in the laboratory, performance of moderate, and highly complex analytical process, establishing performing and documenting quality assurance, quality control and equipment maintenance, recognizing problems and assisting the Clinical Laboratory Supervisor in identifying causes, confirming and verifying results, principles, and instruments, correlating and interpreting data based on knowledge of factors affecting test results, data handling and input, answering the telephone. The shift for this position is Tuesday - Friday, 7:30pm - 6:00am. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Technical Skills * Performs moderate, and/or highly complex analytic processes with supervision. Uses routine and specialized automated and non-automated laboratory procedures and/or techniques for which he/she is qualified, trained, and demonstrates competency according to established lab section operating procedures. * Operates laboratory instruments and ensures proper functioning of laboratory equipment. * Troubleshoots instrument malfunction(s) and performs preventive and corrective maintenance and repairs on all laboratory equipment. * Recognizes when professional service is required and consults with manufacturers and service personnel if available to obtain help in resolving instrument problems. * Reports service needs to supervisor for resolution. * Maintains records and documentation of maintenance. * Calibrates laboratory instruments to ensure accuracy of test results. Performs quality control procedures as specified and maintains quality control records and documentation necessary to meet the standards of accrediting agencies. * Understands appropriate specimen collection, handling and transport procedures. * Prepares specimens for analysis and determines acceptability of samples within guidelines. * Assists in developing procedures for specimen collection, handling and transport to maintain specimen integrity and viability. * Verifies accuracy, and enters data in the laboratory computer system, along with appropriate explanatory or interpretive information. Meets all section turn-around times. * Validates acceptability of test results by review of quality control and all other test parameters. * Identifies the technical, instrumental and/or physiologic causes of unexpected test results. * Evaluates and calculates quality control statistics to assess accuracy, reproducibility and validity of current laboratory methods. * Monitors quality assurance and assists in data collection and preparation of QA indicators. * Performs internal and external proficiency testing. Handles proficiency testing samples in the same manner as patient samples. * Maintains clean and orderly work area. Cleans bench surfaces and equipment each shift or after contamination or spill. * Meets work product output expectations.
